From virtual to in-person, the North of England’s leading conference for developers and designers is back!
A day of inspirational talks and digital know-how awaits as All Day Hey! takes over Everyman Cinema on Thursday 5th May 2022. This is their first in-person event since the pandemic began, and they’ve lined up an incredible list of speakers from some of the world’s leading tech companies. We’re talking Microsoft, Monzo and Netlify, to name but a few.
Doors open at 9am for chit-chat and mingling before the opening remarks at 10am, then it’s straight into the action (and the insight). Emily Cressey, Product Designer at Sketch, will kick things off at 10:15am with a deep-dive into design systems. They are, like most things, meant to make our lives easier, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions, so Emily will delve into the belly of the beast, questioning how we can toe the line between consistency and flexibility, clarity and rigidity.
Microsoft’s Stephanie Stimac is up next. She’ll take to the stage at 11:05am to talk user experience and visual design best practices for progressive web apps. She’ll reveal how, using a single codebase, you can create a seamless experience that translates from the web to desktop and mobile applications. And before you break for lunch, you’ll also have the chance to hear Jhey Tompkins as he delves into the creative process and reveals how building hundreds of demos can reveal entirely new ways of working.
Lunch runs for 80 minutes, leaving time to catch-up with old colleagues and meet other experts in your field, then it’s straight into a trio of lightning talks, taking you from one subject to the next in a 45-minute flash. Take a break and stretch your legs before Cassidy Williams, Head of Developer Experience and Education at Remote, dials in to explain how functional programming works – editors at the ready, this will be an interactive to-and-fro, complete with fun exercises you can do yourself.
The final speaker of the day is Andy Bell. Not only is he a designer and front-end developer, but he founded Set Creative Studio, a web agency that specialises in super-creative websites. Now he’s going to let you in on the secret of his success by explaining how subtly manipulating the browser, using progressive enhancement, CSS layout and modern CSS capabilities to build resilient front-ends, can enhance the user experience, regardless of device, connection speed or context.
“We’re delighted to be back in-person, and to bring an all-star line-up of speakers to Leeds to share their knowledge, passion and experience with the region’s tech community,” Josh Nesbitt, Founder of Hey! Presents, explained. “All Day Hey! brings the region’s developers and designers together, creating new opportunities and inspiring people to drive the local industry forward.”
Although this is the first in-person All Day Hey! since 2020, they haven’t quite let go of the virtual mindset of the last two years. In fact, the entire event will be streamed live, with dedicated online networking channels for attendees, and speakers available after each presentation to answer questions from the audience. So if you aren’t quite ready to get back to normal and don’t fancy reuniting with the crowds, you can still soak up all the seasoned wisdom of the speakers with a remote ticket (for a significantly lower price).
