Learn to code with the help of experienced developers

Sky Coding Club is the brainchild of Sally Waters and Rachel Emsley. In 2017, they secured a place on Get Into Tech, Sky’s women-only coding bootcamp. It helped to kickstart their careers as software developers, but it was also hard work. Sometimes, they got stuck and they didn’t know anyone who could help, so they decided to launch Sky Coding Club to connect budding developers with experienced software engineers.
It’s a godsend if you’re new to coding. Now, if you hit stumbling block or go awry, you won’t have to keep tinkering with the code by yourself. Instead, you can join one of their regular meetups and ask for help or send a message out to the community and see if one of their devs has any ideas. There’s no pressure and no obligation, just dip in whenever you want and make the most of the expertise of the Sky team. After all, they’re here to help.

Whether you’re a complete novice who’s never written a line of code, a bootcamp graduate who needs a little extra support or an existing software engineer who wants to learn a new language, Sky Coding Club is just what you need. Their volunteers are experienced devs who can help you crack HTML, CSS and Javascript, but they also have experts in mobile development and frameworks like React, so whatever you’re struggling with, you can get the help you need.
For those of you who are just starting out, they have a curriculum of online courses to help you learn the ropes. They’re all free and self-taught, but with the experts at Sky Coding Club to support you, you’ll whizz through them. Whenever you have question you can’t answer or a problem you can’t solve, you’ll have a whole community of Sky developers on-hand to help. You can even quiz them on potential career tracks.

Joining Sky Coding Club is as simple as signing up to their Slack workspace. Not only do they post all their events here, but they also have developers on-hand in case you get stuck between meetups. You can throw your questions out to the community in the #general channel or direct message the people you’ve been working with to follow up or update them on your progress. That’s the beauty of Sky Coding Club, it offers ongoing support.
And the events themselves? They’re a mix of online via Microsoft Teams and in-person, with face-to-face events scheduled monthly, so you can choose a format that fits your life and your learning style. At the start of the event, just tell them what you’re interested in or what you’re stuck on and they’ll pair you with a developer who can help. That way, you’ll get the dedicated time and one-to-one advice you need to move forward and break into the industry.
