What happens when it’s so miserable out that you want to hole up inside, but you’ve met someone that makes you want to go out? These cosy hangouts are the answer…
Yes, going out right now will probably see you fighting your way through chilly winds and maybe even a rain storm or two, if the weatherman is to be believed, but some things (and indeed, some people) are worth going out for. So if you’ve found your potential Mr or Mrs Right, here’s where to go on those chilly spring dates.
Bowling, made cool again, Roxy Lanes will see you stepping out of the cold and into a second floor hideaway that looks every bit as right now as the bars of Call Lane and Merrion Street, but with the added bonus of four bowling alleys. See whose aim is truest as you sup craft beer and cocktails, all the while steadfastly ignoring the weather outside.
Roxy Lanes, 1st Floor, The Podium, Bond Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 5BQ.
The Cross Keys
For a more traditional take on a cosy date, why not head for The Cross Keys? You’ll find plenty of nooks and crannies to hide away in with your date, with a little something for everyone behind the bar. We’re talking ale, craft beer and all manner of spirits, as well as a decent selection of wine. Just add their menu of British classics, taking you from steaks and chops to beer battered cod and chips, and you’re onto a good thing.
The Cross Keys, 107 Water Lane, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS11 5WD.
Khana Bombay Cafe
Entertainment is key to holing up inside – and you’ll find something completely different at new Headingley eatery, Khana Bombay Cafe. As well as serving up a heart-warming selection of teas, cocktails and small Indian plates, they have a rather unusual game for you to play – Carrom. It’s a board game of sorts, drawing comparisons with shuffleboard and snooker, as well as chess and draughts, so you’ll need a strategy and some serious skills to beat your date.
Khana Bombay Cafe, 38 North Lane, Headingley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS6 3HU.
Outlaws Yacht Club
Head to Outlaws Yacht Club on a cold day and you’ll be met with fogged up windows that promise warmth within. It creates a thin veil between you and the outside world, so you can enjoy a coffee, a beer or a cocktail, oblivious to the dramatic scene that will await you when you leave. Why not treat yourself to one of their tasty cheese boards while you play a game of Guess Who with your date?
Outlaws Yacht Club, 38 New York Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 7DY.
It’s the obvious choice, a cinema where you can not only get a sofa seat to share together, but also pizzas delivered to your seat and an array of alcoholic drinks to enjoy while you watch the film – there’s even a wine cooler built into your side-table. For the length of your film, which could be anything from Hollywood blockbusters to live screenings of Shakespearean plays, you can completely forget the world outside.
Everyman, Trinity Leeds, Albion St, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 5AY.
