Bored of the same old thing every weekend? Mix it up a little with these outdoor activities…
It’s no fun staying indoors, so why not make the most of the incredible countryside right on our doorstep by going on a real adventure? You’ll have plenty of choice, this is Yorkshire after all, so you can go white water rafting, abseiling and even caving on your search for the ultimate adrenaline high. The question is – which will you do first?
White water rafting on the River Washburn
Cave & Canyon UK now run special rafting days in two locations – you can go to the River Leven near the border with Durham or the River Washburn near Thruscross Reservoir. You’ll join their experienced instructors as you take on fast-moving rapids on a mission to master the maze of waves, turns and drops along the way. Each raft holds eight people and you’ll need a minimum of six in your group to try it out. A half day session costs £45 per person.

Tree top adventures at Camp Hill
Camp Hill is home to one of Yorkshire’s finest tree-top adventure centres. It’s a great day out, whether you’re a kid or an adult, and you can take on 20 different obstacles up to 14 metres from the ground. Climb, swing and jump your way around the course – or take on a smaller version which will see you tackle just the 40-foot climbing wall, skywalk and 172-metre zip wire. Prices start at £25 for adults or £20 for children.

Abseiling down How Stean Gorge
How Stean Gorge is the perfect place to go abseiling. You can take the 45-foot plunge down their purpose-built abseiling frame from the bridge to the gorge, but that’s not the only adventure that awaits here. Your abseil will be followed by a gorge walk that will see you working your way back to the top of the gorge. Along the way, you’ll scramble over boulders, slide down waterspouts and even sit under waterfalls. You get to do both for £45 per person.

Caving at Dow Cave
Here’s your chance to try potholing – Lost Earth Adventures will take you into the depths of Dow Cave. You’ll go in through the main stream-way before heading upstream through ancient limestone passageways towards the old mine workings, which date back to the 18th-century. This isn’t a tourist attraction, it’s an adventure, so you’ll have to climb and crawl on your way to the Old Final Chamber. Prices start at £45 per person for open group sessions.

If it’s your first time, they’ll give you a full induction, then you can make the most of their Wake Park whenever you like. This is no walk in the park as you slide along the Rixen Pipe Rail, ride up the Red Bull Diamond Peak and tackle the Rixen Elephant. Wakeboarding sessions start from £16 per person.
