· Emma Cooke · Yorkshire

Scramble, slide and wade through these gorging adventures.

You can set out into the great outdoors on these gorge walking experiences, wading through water and scrambling over rocks as you go.

Nature becomes your playground on these gorge walking adventures across Yorkshire. This is your chance to follow the course of a stream, tackling obstacles as you go. Think sliding down epic water chutes, swimming in fresh water and jumping from eight-metre cliffs, all squeezed into an action-packed few hours. Yorkshire is limestone country after all, meaning there are plenty of bizarre rock formations to scramble over. It’s time to get out there, so who’s brave enough to go with you?

Lost Earth Adventures

Gorge walking, Lost Earth Adventures

You can go gorge walking with Lost Earth Adventures in two different areas of North Yorkshire. If you head to the Eastern Dales, you’ll tackle almighty waterfall climbs and splash around under beautiful cascading waterfalls. More of an adrenalin junkie? Head to Ingleton, where your day will centre more around canyoning. Here you can jump from eight metre-cliffs and pelt down a zipline as you scramble down towards the lower section of Beezley Falls. They’re a fun bunch too, so expect a few games along the way.

Studfold Activity Centre, Lofthouse, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG3 5SG & Ingleton Community Centre, Main Village Car Park, Ingleton, North Yorkshire, LA6 3HG. Each session is £49 per person in Harrogate for three hours and £89 per person in Ingleton for three to five hours.

How Stean Gorge

How Stean Gorge

How Stean Gorge is nestled away in the Harrogate countryside and its bizarre limestone shapes make it one of the coolest gorge walking experiences in Yorkshire. Kick off Tom Cruise-style, with a 45 foot abseil, before wading against the water in your purpose-built wetsuit. You can scramble over huge boulders, jump into deep plunge pools and even slide down waterspouts. It’s like one big natural playground, but don’t worry, instructors will be on hand not only for guidance, but to film the whole experience on their headcams.

How Stean Gorge, Lofthouse, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG3 5SF. Each session is £37.50 per person for three hours.

Alfresco Adventures

Alfresco Adventures put on gorge walking sessions all over Yorkshire and the Lakes, so they know their stuff. You’ll be taking on the 20 metre high slot-canyon Hell Gill, kitted out in your helmet, wetsuit and cag overall. It’s famously narrow and is largely taken up by the deep stream, so expect to wade through most of it. You’ll have your fair share of scrambling too, and the chance to walk under spectacular waterfalls. You can even release your inner child and slide down the super-smooth limestone as you go.

Hell Gill, Aisgill, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4JY. Each session is £45 for three hours.
