Stay somewhere a little bit different on your next trip to the Yorkshire countryside.
Heading out to Yorkshire for a little R&R? There are plenty of cottages and camp sites for you to choose from, but why not try something different? From luxurious geodomes to converted rail carriages and hotel boats, make the place you rest your head one of the highlights of the entire trip.
A shepherd’s hut in the middle of nowhere
What a quaint idea! You can stay in a petite shepherd’s hut in the heart of the countryside. It’s surrounded by fields and meadows, with the Dales to the west and the Moors to the east, making this the perfect escape from city life – and the hut itself is an absolute treat. It may be small, but it’s really cosy, with sheep wool insulation, double glazing and a wood burning stove. Outside, you’ll find a firepit for BBQs and nights under the stars – you can even use the hot tub for a small fee.

A terribly luxurious treehouse
Round up your friends for an adventure with a difference. Golden Oak Treehouse is split into two parts – you’ve got the main building, which sleeps six, and the treehouse, which sleeps two. Cross a simple wooden bridge to a luxurious bedroom, suspended in the air – it’s the perfect place to enjoy one of their in-cabin spa treatments. You can take advantage of a host of luxurious facilities here, including fluffy robes, a log burning stove and a hot tub, which you’ll find outside of the terrace.

A converted railway carriage
How about this for an unusual escape? You can stay in an old rail carriage, as the old Skipwith Station has been converted into a fabulous holiday destination by owners Mary and Graham. They’re self-catering, and come with all the mod cons – that’s right, you’ll have an oven, a fridge and even a dishwater to take advantage of. So what’s it to be? A converted MK2 Mail Van, an Ex-Virgin West Coast Carriage or the old Derwent First-Class Compartments?

A traditional seaside resort filled with curiosities
Making a trip to the seaside that little bit more interesting, La Rosa Hotel is a traditional seaside resort in the coastal town of Whitby. Over the years, they’ve had some very famous guests, including author Lewis Carroll, and you’ll find hints of his influence in the rooms. Each one is unique, with its own fun, quirky theme – expect antique kitsch, curious ornaments and old school luxury. This is vintage chic at its best and you’ll love all the weird and wonderful discoveries you’ll make during your stay.

A hotel boat on the Leeds Liverpool Canal
How about a boating holiday? Lady Teal is a specially designed, luxury hotel boat. She’s the widest hotel boat on the system, giving guests a little bit of extra space, with ensuite bathrooms for all rooms and a spacious shared living room. They run canal cruises throughout the year, with a host of interesting options, including a cultural trail from Leeds to Skipton and a panoramic countryside tour from Skipton to Reedley Marina.

An old school VW campervan
When you’re making a list of unusual escapes, you’ve got to include a VW Camper, right? Now buying one will definitely blow your budget, but don’t worry, because you don’t have to – just borrow one from Liberty Campers. They have a collection of 9 fully-insured holiday campers – the question is, will you go with the new (but rather uninspiring) T6 and T5 model or a proper retro camper? We know what we’d choose for a jaunt around the Yorkshire countryside.

A futuristic geodome with incredible views
This one’s a little bit special. The geodomes at Camp Kátur offer a more luxurious camping experience, with a lovely outdoors indoors feel. By day, you can look out on the beautiful countryside, by night you can look up at the stars – but you’ll still have private toilets, hot gas showers and a log burning fire to keep you toasty. Outside, there’s a BBQ area, fire basket and picnic furniture – you can even try their outdoor eco spa.
