Leeds Digital Job Fair

Leeds’ digital and tech sector is booming, with over 600 vacancies across the city – so why look anywhere else?

When it comes to Leeds’ job market, you’re much more likely to hear about the financial and manufacturing sectors than anything else, but actually, there are now 3,400 companies operating in the digital and technology industries in Leeds. So many, in fact, that there’s now a huge demand for new talent in the city.

It’s something Amy De-Balsi, Owner of Herd Technology Job Board, has been following with interest. “Local employers are looking for web designers, web developers, digital marketers and project managers, ranging from entry level jobs upwards” She told us, “But there is a massive digital skills gap in the city, which I’ve been tracking for the last two years. When I first looked at it, it was about 420 vacancies, specifically in these job roles, and now this has increased to about 640 in 2 years.”

That’s a massive increase, and one that shows just how quickly the digital and technology industries in Leeds are growing, creating a massive opportunity for graduates and young professionals to get their careers off to a flying start. So instead of just watching, Amy decided to do something about it – and thus Leeds Digital Job Fair was born.

“All the major Leeds employers are going to be there and people will be able to chat to them about their culture, what projects they do, what technologies they use, what the opportunities are, so it’s a chance for them to have a real informal chat about whether they fancy working there.” Amy explained – and she’s not kidding. They’ve got a host of big names lined up for the event, with Sky Betting & Gaming, William Hill, Callcredit, Sky and Lhasa Limited all making an appearance, alongside Google who’ll be running seminars on the industry itself.

All in all, they’ve got 30 businesses exhibiting, ranging from the big fish to small start-ups, and they’ll be doing their thing in the kind of laid-back environment that you’re likely to find back in their offices. So alongside the various exhibitors who’ll be attending the fair at First Direct Arena, you’ll also find air hockey and football tables, with breakout spaces where you can go and chat with folk. Meanwhile, over in the First Direct Bar, they’ll have companies pitching, as they strive to attract the best talent to their businesses.

It’s not just employers though. You can also find likeminded people at Leeds Digital Job Fair, as the city’s tech meet-ups will be coming out in force, giving you a place to rant, rave, create and collaborate, with folk who work in the industry too.

Leeds Digital Job Fair is being run in conjunction with Leeds Beckett University, Leeds City Council, Tech North and the Leeds BID – four organisations who are equally invested in showcasing the prowess of the city’s digital and tech sector, and the opportunities that this presents.

As demand for digital and tech roles grows, so too do salaries – making the sector a lucrative choice indeed. “The national regional salary in general is about £22,000, but these jobs average out at £36,000, they are paying really well.” Amy explained, “It depends on what kind of job you’re after, so web developers, there’s a real gap in that sector, and they’re starting to pay a lot more, salaries have jumped up considerably over the last 2 years.”

So whether you’re a graduate looking to land your first job or a young professional ready to make a move, this might just be the event that kick starts your career.
