Check your diary, because we’ve got an unmissable night out lined up for you on Tuesday 22nd October 2019…

Ever been to the opera? We’ve got the perfect way for you to dip your toe in the water. Leave behind the humdrum of the daily grind and step into our Parisian café-bar for a night of live music, experiential cocktails and French cheeses. For one night only, Opera North will take over Below Stairs with their lounge bar duo who will perform a series of French classics that will have you swooning over your cheeseboard. Be it a romantic night out or a catch up with friends, you won’t find anything else quite like it.

Step inside our Parisian café-bar for a night of live music

Designed for opera virgins, this is a night of laidback tunes that will transport you to the bustling clubs and cafés of early-60s Paris. In this underground world, you can sit back and let the music wash over you as Bibi and Milos run through some of the most famous French songs ever to bless your eardrums. It’s a winning combination – Bibi’s sultry vocals and Milos’ fast-fingered accordion skills will blow you away.

As the evening rolls on, you’ll hear songs from Puccini’s famous opera, La bohème, and Strauss’ unforgettable Die Fledermaus, but they’ll be intermingled with familiar French tunes from singers like Edith Piaf. Her hit ‘La vie en rose’ is an earworm that has won over the world. Written in 1945 in the cafés of the Champs Elysées, this toe-tapping tale of giddy romance is guaranteed to make you smile.

While you enjoy the show, you’ll be treated to an exquisite feast. You’ll get a cheeseboard, loaded with French fromage like Tomme de Savoie, Epoisse and Roquefort. Spread it onto crackers, then load on Dijon mustard and cornichons to create an oh-so-French dinner that will hold off the hunger pangs while you listen to the music.

But it’s not just food, you’ll also be treated to an exclusive cocktail inspired by Opera North’s revival of La bohème. Below Stairs is famed for experiential cocktails, but Paris Dawn takes the biscuit – it uses Cognac made in the same way it was in the 1840s and famous French liqueur Grand Marnier. Add the rich coffee flavours of the Parisian cafes, the sweet croissant aromas of the bakeries and the dewy morning notes of fig leaf, hazelnut and honey liqueur. Served with an aromatic Parisian ‘cigarette’, it’s an experience unto itself.
