Get Into Gaming returns to Leeds International Festival to show you how to turn your passion for video games into a career.

The UK’s gaming industry is worth over £5 billion and 9% of it is based right here in Yorkshire, so a career in gaming isn’t just a pipe dream, it’s a real possibility – and that’s what Get Into Gaming sets out to prove. This is your chance to learn more about the industry and find out how you can get involved with a whole day of talks, workshops and video games. So if you’re into video games, get down to The Cube at The Tetley on Saturday 11th May 2019.

Last year’s event, organised by Simon Barratt from Leeds-based games company Cooperative Innovations, was a huge success. And this time, he’s teamed up with Jamie Sefton, Managing Director of Game Republic, to make it even better. Together, they’ve put together a cracking line-up that has something for everyone, including a trio of expert talks that will show you how to make a career in the video game industry.

Freelance Video Producer and Presenter, Alyssa Judge, will kick it off. She’s worked for Nintendo, BBC and the Official PlayStation Magazine, so who better to tell you how to Get Started in Games Media? She’s followed by Chloe Crookes from Wakefield’s Team 17, the company responsible for Worms. Her talk on QA Testing in the Games Industry will show you that there’s more to testing than playing games all day.

Jamie Sefton is up next. He’s the man behind Game Republic, a group set up 15 years ago to support Yorkshire businesses in the video game industry. At the event, he’ll give you an insight into how the region became a hotbed of video gaming talent. Afterwards, you’ll hear from the Get Into Gaming Panel. Simon Barratt will be joined by Milena Koljensic from Epic, Louise Chambers from Cooperative Innovations and Katy Marshall from Digital Maker to talk about the future of gaming in Yorkshire.

But it’s not just talks. You can find out about the video gaming courses that will set you on the road to success or have a go at one of the interactive events available on the day. Stuart Litford of Square Games will host a Making Games with Paper Workshop to show you how designers create games on paper first. Alternatively, you could join Bradford-based Impact Games for Make Level Make! This is your chance to make your own platform game and characters to play online.

And of course, you can play games. They will have 25 consoles hooked up, with everything from vintage classics to modern favourites on PS4 and XBOX One. Cooperative Innovations will show off their latest virtual reality games and you can create your own VR experience with their 3D virtual drawing and sculpting activity.

Whether you’re a gaming-obsessed student interested in the next steps or a video game pro who never considered a career a real possibility, Get into Gaming will give you a unique glimpse into the industry and show you how you could fit into it. There’s so much more to gaming than just playing – from design and animation to programming, sound and music, this is your chance to find your forte.

Get Into Gaming takes place at The Cube at The Tetley on Saturday 11th May 2019. Tickets are £5 for adults and £4 for concessions.
