Bring the whole family along to Otley Courthouse for a week of experiments, talks, comedy and more at Otley Science Festival this November.
Formed in 2008 by The One Show veteran Marty Jopland and Otley Courthouse Arts Centre members, Otley Science Festival has been helping to attract nationally recognised speakers to Leeds, raise awareness of scientific subjects and help get kids interested in the natural world. But most of all, it’s a fun filled week of events for every member of the family.
Kicking off the festival, Otley Courthouse is offering something just for the tots. Bring them along in the morning for some fun Silly Science Toddler Time activities that will help them discover their natural surroundings. While in the evening, Marty Jopson will amaze you with his record breaking science. Discover paper planes that can fly over 70 metres, gigantic bubbles, Slinkys, and he may just well break a few more records too.
Have older kids or love birds of prey? Midweek at Otley Science Festival, Head Falconer at Owl Adventures, Ryan Stocks will lead The Amazing World Of Owls for kids and adults aged ten and over. This fascinating seminar will let you meet some beautiful owls up close and learn about how they have evolved to live in harsh environments.
It’s not just about activities for kids either. Wednesday, catch a screening of sci-fi thriller Gravity, starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. And if you’re in need of some big laughs be sure to catch Robin Ince Is (In and) Out of His Mind. The award-winning comic will delve into the last 100 years of psychiatry, picking apart everything from Freud to lab rats.
As always, the Otley Science Festival is set to end on a bang with the free Science Fair with something for all ages. But it’s not all just about demos – there’ll be plenty of experiments you can try out yourself. Handle some real geology, play with physics, see a real heart and investigate radio waves. You can make a whole day of it too as the cafe is open for cakes, tea and coffee.
Otley Science Festival is at Otley Courthouse from Monday 10th November 2014 to Saturday 15th November 2014. Tickets are available.
