E.T. has never sounded as good as this
37 years after its release, E.T. continues to wow audiences around the world. This endearing tale of a lost alien who becomes friends with 10-year-old Elliott has stood the test of time. They go on an incredible adventure to help him find his way home, all the while working to keep E.T.’s existence a secret from the authorities. Expect flying bikes, unbreakable friendships and a tear-jerking goodbye.
But this is no ordinary screening. The score will be played live by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Ben Palmer. He’s one of Europe’s best live-to-film conductors and performs around 40 of these concerts every year, with everything from Harry Potter to Home Alone, and it brings a new dimension to the movie experience.
“There’s something about actually seeing the musicians playing on stage in front of you, working hard (not to mention the conductor, who has to keep 70 musicians perfectly synchronised with the screen),” Palmer told us. “That gives an intimacy, immediacy and emotional weight to the performance that you just don’t get from a recording – even one as incredible as the original soundtrack. One of the reasons people love this film is because of the music – just think of that soaring Flying Theme as the bikes take to the sky – and experiencing that being recreated right in front of you can be very moving.”
The climax will hit you right in the feels, especially when the orchestra crescendos into the ‘End Credits’, which Palmer promises will be a triumphant blaze of glory. How awesome does that sound?
