Round up your mates and synchronise your diaries because shuffleboard has landed in Trinity Kitchen…
Banned by King Henry VIII because of its downright addictiveness, Shuffleboard has wormed its way back into the public consciousness and won over a hoard of adoring fans. It’s now the game of choice for competitive socialisers and a favourite in bars across the land – but this is the first time it’s come to a UK shopping centre as Trinity Kitchen welcomes two 16-foot SHUFL tables into its ranks.
Shuffleboard is the illegitimate love child of curling, bowls and petanque. It takes skill and it takes practice, but the game itself is simple – you just have to get your puck further down the board than your competitors (without sending it off the end). And yes, you can use your puck to knock those little suckers out of play, so if you aim it true, you can change the game in an instant. You need two teams of one to four players, but only the winning team gets points – so if you can’t get the first place, you ain’t getting nuttin’.
You can pick up the basics in minutes, but if you want to master the art of shuffleboard, you need to know the board – and Trinity Kitchen have gone for the very best. They’ve sourced two 16-foot tables from SHUFL, the UK’s no.1 shuffleboard brand, and they’ve precision engineered the perfect shot – ‘the curve’ lets you ease your puck down the scoring zone to a perfect ‘five point’ shot, but it ain’t easy, so you’ll need to work at it.
The shuffleboard tables will keep you entertained, but they aren’t the only change coming Trinity Kitchen. They’ve joined forces with Beer Hawk, Wetherby’s very own beer retailer with over 1,000 labels available online, to offer the city’s first self-service beer wall. The range is ever-changing, so you can get something different on every visit, but they launched with five must-try beers.
You can start with two Camden Brewery classics – the Pale Ale and the Hells Lager – but if you want something a little more local, why not test out your bar tending skills on a North Brewing Co. classic? The North x Temescal IPA is the result of an exciting collaboration with the Californian brewery and it promises a full-bodied IPA with light floral notes, earthy flavours and rich aromas of pineapple.
Woaaahh! We’re only part way through the list. We’ve still got the thirst-quenching spate Münchner Hell Lager to tell you about, not to mention the ever-popular Goose Midway Session IPA, which at 4.1% will keep you at the top of your game as you embark on your shuffleboard marathon. Prices range from £4.75 to £6, which you can pay by card using their contactless pay points – there’s one for every pint, which means you can get a round in without missing your turn.
One more thing. In their mission to turn Trinity Kitchen into an entertainment hub, they’ve also launched the Dugout, a new space dedicated to live sport. It has 8 HD screens playing the latest action from across the globe, so whether you want to catch the match, watch the big fight or follow the latest tournament, you can just take a pew in their new stadium seating area and enjoy the show. They’re even going to show live finals of your favourite TV shows – X-Factor is a given, but we’ve got our fingers crossed for Eurovision.
While you’re there, why don’t you check out their traders? Alongside permanent residents like Pho, Doner Shack and Rola Wala, they have a revolving line-up of street food vans, lifted in every 6 weeks to give you something new to try every time you visit. Right now, you can feast on chicken satay tacos at Tikk’s Thai Kitchen or pizza burgers at Sela’s Little Red Food Truck. They’ve got crispy beef baos and salt ’n’ pepper fries at Dim Sum Su or gourmet steak sandwiches courtesy of Longhorn Steak Co. Hell, you can even order chickpea croquettes and tagine filled Khoubz bread at El Kouzina.
It’s a winning combination and one that will take you from afternoon through to night, so pucker up and puck off, because once you’ve tried it, you’ll be as addicted as the rest of us.
