Summer wouldn’t be complete without a trail of roaring, moving, life-sized dinos to entertain the kids!
Quality time and family adventures – that’s what the summer holidays are for. But as every parent knows, they also come with an inevitable chorus of “I’m bored!” Well, no more, because Leeds Jurassic Trail is back, bigger and better than ever. Round up your little explorers and set off on a prehistoric trek around the city, hunting dinosaurs as you go.
It won’t be long before the summer holidays arrive, which means you’ll have little ones at home, wanting to be entertained. But Leeds Jurassic Trail is the perfect way to keep them busy. It kicks off on Saturday 24th July 2021 and runs all the way through the summer until Sunday 12th September 2021, giving you loads of time to hunt out all 13 animatronic dinosaurs.
The T-Rex will be back in Trinity Leeds, and at 18-metres-long, he’s a fearsome beast! Watch as he swings his tail and roars at passers-by. In nearby Trinity Kitchen, the caged velociraptors will snap hungrily at diners as they try to make their escape. And if that’s not enough to tempt your little ones into town, Briggate will dominated by the 8-metre neck of the giant diplodocus.
Just down the road, Victoria Quarter’s iconic roof will be obscured by a flock of pteranodons and a massive amargasaurus will invade Victoria Gate. Meanwhile, Leeds Corn Exchange will get its very own spinosaurus, Kirkgate Market will welcome the never-before-seen Yorkshiresaurus and visitors to Leeds Train Station will be welcomed by a fearsome Baryonyx.
And that’s just the beginning – you’ve still got five more dinosaurs to seek out, so hurry down to The Light, where you’ll find a 6-metre allosaurus with a wickedly spiky tail. Elsewhere, The Merrion Centre will have a stegosaurus with baby, The Core will have a poison-spitting dilophosaurus and the St Johns Centre will have a duo of stygimoloch and pachycephhlosaurus.
Every dinosaur on the trail has been custom-made for the occasion. They plan every detail, from size and scale to movements and noises that it will make. Plotting complete, they forge a metal frame with the freedom to move, then cover it in sponge and cut it down into an awe-inspiring dino shape. Next comes the skin, which is applied and painted to create our life-like dinos.
Want to win great prizes? Pick up a trail map in any participating venue, then get it stamped at every dinosaur on the trail and upload it to the Leeds Jurassic Trail Facebook or Instagram for a chance to win. You can also grab a copy of the 32-page souvenir programme, which is packed with information about the dinosaurs featured in the trail to help inspire young minds.
As part of Leeds Jurassic Trail, a new dino-themed shop has opened in Trinity Leeds. You can pick up everything from 3D puzzles to cuddly toys and balloons. Plus, there’s a selfie-worthy dinosaur egg and a T-Rex ride the kids will absolutely love, making this a must-visit. While you’re there, keep your eyes peeled for their roaming dinosaurs who will be hitting the streets.
“We promised Leeds Jurassic Trail would be back bigger and with more teeth. Thanks to our incredible partners, it’s already exceeded all expectations, so prepare for something special,” Andrew Cooper, Chief Executive of LeedsBID, told us. “Together we’re gearing up for the safe return of visitors and long-lasting attractions like this are essential in helping to entice people back.”
