Presented by Dance Consortium, this new take on Giselle is anything but traditional…
Giselle is an iconic ballet, performed all over the world, but you’ve never seen it like this before. Internationally-renowned choreographer Dada Masilo has reinterpreted and reimagined the ballet to create a thoroughly modern tale of love, loss and revenge. This bold new vision uses contemporary dance, traditional Tswana movement and classical ballet to bring an iconic story bang up to date – and you can see it for just £15 at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford.

South African composer Philip Miller has layered African voice and percussion onto Adolf Adams’ original score to create something entirely new. It’s heartbreakingly beautiful and the perfect accompaniment for Masilo’s new interpretation, which moves the story to a lively South African village.
Just like in the original, Giselle is a young, trusting peasant girl who falls for the wrong guy. Betrayed by her lover and spurned by her family, she succumbs to the heartbreak, but her story doesn’t end there because she comes back from the grave to wreak revenge. That’s where the similarities end. Masilo’s Giselle is strong and grounded, her Myrtha is a male Sangoma and her choreography fuses classical ballet with African dance steps.
