Get a taste of the opera at this incredible quick-fire performance
On Friday 7th and Saturday 8th February 2020, Opera North will leave the theatre to put on an intimate performance of The Marriage of Figaro at Below Stairs. They’ve whittled the cast down to just four singers and replaced the orchestra with an accordion player, so you can get a glimpse of the opera without committing to the full 3-hour show. It’s the perfect way to dip your toe in the water, but don’t be surprised if you come out wanting more.
The Marriage of Figaro is an all-out comedy, so expect belly laughs galore as you watch Figaro and Susanna getting into (and out of) all sorts of trouble. Our two lovebirds are set to get wed, but there’s one big obstacle in their way – the Count. He wants to bed Susanna and there’s an archaic law that says he can on the eve of her wedding. To outwit him, they’ll have to rope in his betrayed wife and boy does she want a little revenge. This is a fast-paced, funny show that will put you right at the heart of things. Not only will you be closer to the action than ever before, but you’ll also have a chance to be a part of it – that’s right, we’re talking audience participation. We did say it was unmissable!
Feast on cheese and sup experiential cocktails
While you enjoy the show, you’ll be treated to an exquisite feast. You’ll get a cheeseboard, with an Italian cheese, a Spanish cheese and a German cheese. Spread it onto crackers, then load on Dijon mustard and cornichons to create a tasty little lunch that pairs perfectly with their opera-inspired cocktail, created especially for the event.
Below Stairs is famed for its experiential cocktails, but The Marriage of Fig’n’Rose takes the biscuit. It’s made with Peppered Pear Gin and Olorosso Sherry, two drinks that are wildly popular in Seville, where the opera is set. They’ve added carnation liqueur in a nod to Cherubino – in the opera, he crushes carnations underfoot when he jumps out of the window and you’ll get a floral garnish to crush between your fingers and release the scent. The rose water takes its cue from Susanna’s big aria, then it just needs fig leaf and honey to create a perfectly balanced and absolutely delicious drink.
Pick a date and get it in the diary

The next day, the doors open at 1pm and the performance starts at 1:15pm, there’s a break for food again and it all wrapped up by 2pm.
