The mother-in-law from hell, a passionate affair and a dramatic climax – that’s what awaits at Opera North’s revival of Katya.
Leoš Janáček was a late bloomer, but the operas he composed in the last decade of his life have become the classics of the modern day – and Katya Kabanova is one of them. Emotionally powerful and undeniably tragic, it will sweep you up in a passionate affair as Katya escapes the trials and tribulations of her weak husband and his overbearing mother by fleeing to the arms of another man. But her joy is short lived. Soon the realisation of what she’s done claims her sanity, with devastating consequences…
Round up your mates for a spectacular night out
If you’re our lucky winner, you’ll bag 4 of the best seats in the house, so you can watch the action unfold in all its glory. Tim Albery has taken a simple, yet powerful approach to the production that brings out the raw emotion of Katya’s plight – and Janáček’s complex score will add a dramatic intensity to the production. It will be performed live by the supremely talented Orchestra of Opera North, led by one of the UK’s only female conductors, Sian Edwards, so this really is an unmissable show.
Fill up before the show with a feast of Indian street food at Bundobust
