Brand new for 2020, Northern Ballet’s Geisha is a touching tale of love, loss and redemption…
This March, Northern Ballet will take you back to 19th Century Japan to tell the heartbreaking story of Okichi. She was one of the most beautiful geishas in Shimoda, but when the mayor sent her to serve the Americans, her life took a tragic turn. Cast aside by US Consul-General Townsend Harris and cast out by her own people, she takes her own life. It’s a true story, but they’ve added a supernatural twist – and you can see it for yourself because we’re giving away two tickets to Geisha with dinner at Restaurant Bar & Grill.
See the story of Okichi unfold on stage
If you’re our lucky winner, you’ll bag two tickets to see Geisha on Thursday 19th March 2020. This beautiful, emotional ballet has been choreographed by Kenneth Tindall, the man behind Northern Ballet’s acclaimed Casanova, and it has an original score by BAFTA Cymru award-winning composer Alexandra Harwood. Together, they’ve created a ballet that toes the line between reality and fantasy, inviting the audience to imagine a world beyond life and death.
As the story unfolds, Okichi forms a bond with a fellow geisha Aiko, and when she takes her own life, it’s that bond that brings her back from the spirit world. But when Aiko recoils from her touch, she lashes out and brings tragedy to the person she loves the most. Horrified at what she’s done, Okichi can’t rest until Aiko forgives her, but will it ever happen? This is your chance to find out as Northern Ballet tell their haunting story through dance.
