How would you like to win a ready-made night out, with two incredible shows and a slap-up dinner at Zaap?
Well, it’s official. There’s never been a better time to go to the opera. Why? Because Opera North has lined up a season of six Little Greats. Short and sweet, they’re emotional firecrackers. Watch in wonder as inanimate objects come to life, see what happens when jealousy sends a show spiralling into chaos and step back in time to discover the dark side of 1950s suburbia – all in as little as 45 minutes. Now, who wants to win tickets?
See Cavalleria rusticana and Trial by Jury in one night
If you’re our lucky winner, you’ll be there on opening night for an incredible double bill. They’re showing two very different operas on Wednesday 27th September 2017, which means you can dip your toe in the water and find out exactly what you like.
You might recognise the music in the first show of the night – Francis Ford Coppola used the intermezzo from Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana in the grand finale of Godfather III. It’s said to be the work that ‘created’ the Mafia, bringing together ideas of honour, family and chivalry in a love triangle that ends in disaster. Traditionally set in Sicily, Director Karolina Sofulak has transplanted it into 1970s communist Poland, giving it a modern twist with a startlingly similar context.
Next up is something altogether different. Trial by Jury is absolutely ludicrous – and that’s what makes it such a must-see. When Angelica is jilted by her husband to be, she decides to take him to court – but rather than throwing it out, the judge and jury are utterly on-side. This is one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s earliest operettas and it will have you laughing in the aisles.
Fill up on delicious Thai street food before the show
Before you settle in for a night of sensational entertainment, make a stop at Zaap for a Thai feed. With an almost overwhelming menu, you’ll be able to tuck into everything from Vegetable Gyozas to Tom Yum Zoup, Gang Massaman Curry and Pad Thai Bo Ran Noodles. You could even treat yourself to one of their specialities, like Phed Yang, a whole roasted duck. And let’s not forget the drinks, wash it all down with Thai beers, cocktails or spirits, with £100 to spend on dinner and drinks.
