Sky Get Into Tech

Sky is helping more women Get Into Tech with their free coding bootcamp. This is your chance to learn the fundamentals of software development in just 15 weeks. Apply now.

Thinking of a career change? Want to get into tech? This is your big chance.

The tech industry needs more women. We represent 50% of the labour market, but only 26% of the tech industry. That means women are missing out on opportunities and businesses are missing out on the unique perspective we bring – which is why Sky is bringing back its Get Into Tech initiative. This women-only coding bootcamp will introduce you to the fundamentals of software development and give you the skills you need to break into the industry.

Why get into tech

Sky Get Into Tech

If you’re thinking about a career change, the technology sector is the obvious choice. It’s growing at a rapid pace, which means there’s huge demand for software engineers. In fact, tech hiring in Leeds has increased by a massive 64% since July 2021 – it now accounts for a fifth of all available roles in the city, so retraining as a developer will put you in high demand.

And then there’s the money. In the first quarter of 2022, the average salary for a tech role in the UK was £62,000 compared to just £35,000 for a non-tech role – that means you could earn almost 80% more if you get into tech. And opportunities to progress come thick and fast, so you can quickly move up the career ladder, especially if you already have transferable skills.

How this bootcamp can help

Sky Get Into Tech

Get Into Tech is a flexible, 15-week coding bootcamp that will introduce you to the basics of software development and prepare you for a career in tech. It’s 100% free, designed to fit around your lifestyle and only open to women. You don’t need any experience and you certainly don’t have to know how to code – you just need an affinity for tech and a willingness to learn.

The course is quick but comprehensive. You’ll learn about everything from technology trends to agile delivery, and try your hand at coding in Python, JavaScript, HTML & CSS. Databases are in there too, and you’ll also have a chance to cover software build and integration. In short, you’ll learn everything you need to know to break into the tech industry.

What to expect from the course

Sky Get Into Tech

The first thing you need to know is that Get Into Tech is virtual. You can do it from anywhere, no commute needed. It starts with an intensive week of full-time study, so you’ll need to be able to get a week off work from Monday 23rd to Friday 27th January 2023, but after that, you’ll switch to one evening session a week, which will run from 6:30pm to 9pm every Wednesday.

Get Into Tech offers a uniquely supportive environment. You’ll be learning alongside a group of women from all walks of life – women who have different backgrounds and experiences, but who are all in the same boat. Outside of your weekly sessions, you’ll be given projects to work on in your time, and it’s not unusual for students to work on them together.

Who can apply and how to do it

Sky Get Into Tech

The first rule of Get Into Tech is ‘you’re never too old to code’. Life experience is a bonus, so Sky encourages women of all ages to apply. You’ll need to be self-motivated, as creative as you are logical and an excellent communicator, because despite the stereotypes, software development is all about teamwork. If that sounds like you, you’re just the woman they want.

Intrigued? Applications are now open, but you’ll have to be quick because they close on Saturday 26th November 2022. If you make the short list, you’ll be invited to join one of their taster sessions on Tuesday 6th or Thursday 8th December 2022, where you can find out if you like coding and if you’re good at it with a fun exercise that lets you have a go for yourself.

Want to find out more? Sky are holding an event at Leeds Dock from 5pm-8pm on Thursday 24th November 2022, which will be your last chance to ask questions before the deadline for applications. Head down there to see a presentation and enjoy free food and drink while you network with Sky staff and other potential applicants.
