Whether you’re just starting out in tech or want to up your game, this is your chance to learn from the experts.
Every day, millions of people sign into Sky, but they couldn’t do it without the Identity Tribe. Based at Leeds Dock, they’ve created a state-of-the-art platform that acts as the gateway to all their services. Usability is key, but they also have to think about security and scalability – after all, they’re under constant attack from hackers, and during their peaks, more than one million people sign into their services simultaneously.
So how do they do it and what happens when things go wrong? You can find out at this eye-opening event on Tuesday 2nd April 2019 as they bring the team out of hiding to embrace their failures and share the lessons they’ve learned. Tickets are just £2 and they come with perks – you’ll get two craft beers and a slice of Dough Boys’ finest pizza at Belgrave Music Hall.
Hear from five expert speakers in one night
The night will start with a short introduction from Barry Moses, Head of Technology at Sky Identity, before you get stuck into the opening talk. Jordan Brennan is up first. He’s a Senior Performance Engineer, which means it’s his job to make sure Sky’s services stay up and running, no matter how many people sign in. Failure would be cataclysmic, and yet, it’s an integral part of what he does, because only by failing can they identify the weakness in their system.
Next up is Tony Simpson. He’s tackling the history of failure in Python JIT. A favourite with start-ups, it’s one of the top five coding languages on the planet, but too many businesses are migrating away. Why? Because it has serious performance issues. In this talk, Simpson will walk you through the attempts to improve JIT compilers, both the successes and the failures, and show you that Python JIT is still as important as ever.
Feedback loops are the next subject on the agenda. Andy Grason, Scrum Master at Sky Identity, will tell you how a constant cycle of monitoring and improvement has helped them to create a system resilient enough to handle millions of simultaneous log-ins. And then it’s time for pizza! From the Salami of Darkness to the Baa No More, Dough Boys will bring up a selection of their famous pizzas for you to dig into, so you can carb up after all that conversation.
After the feast, and once you’ve topped up your beer, Joe Swan, Principle Engineer at Sky Identity will talk firewalls, before Senior Java Developer Anthony Sargeant takes to the stage. His subject? A nightmare before Christmas. No one wants a DHCP outage on the last day before the holidays, but that’s exactly what happened to him and this is your chance to find out how everyone got together around the tree to diagnose the problem and get home in time for Christmas.
After every talk, you’ll have a chance to ask those burning questions in an intimate Q&A with the experts – and afterwards, you can mingle with your fellow techies, learn more about the opportunities at Sky Identity and use up those final beer tokens at the bar.
