Back for the third time and bigger than ever, Leeds Digital Job Fair is proving that Leeds is the place to be when it comes to digital and tech…
Let’s start with the bigger picture. The UK is the digital capital of Europe, it’s leading the way in terms of tech investment, digital collaboration, talent and skills – but what you might not realise is that Leeds is playing a huge part in that. Our digital sector is going from strength to strength, with a string of world-leading companies calling the city home, alongside pioneering start-ups and game-changing innovators.
It’s already one of the strongest industries in the city and it’s growing at a rapid pace. In fact, the digital and tech sector has a GVA of £688 million, with a growth potential of 92% – now imagine what that means in terms of employment. As the sector grows, so too does the need for highly skilled workers, with everything from digital account handlers to web designers, developers and data analysts in high demand.
And when we say high demand, we’re talking 23,734 jobs according to Tech Nation 2017. Right now, there are 1,200 vacancies on the Herd Job Forum alone, which is why founder Amy De-Balsi launched Leeds Digital Job Fair in January 2016. The inaugural event, which puts the city’s leading tech firms in a room with job seekers on every level, attracted over 1,300 attendees – so they did it again in October. This time, it brought in 2,000 people. You can see why their third outing is such a big deal.
The date has already been set – they’re taking over First Direct Arena on 28th April 2017, and they’re bringing 50 of the city’s brightest sparks with them. You’ve got NHS Digital, LexisNexis, Jet2 and Hitachi, to name but a few. And of course, Sky Betting & Gaming will be back for the third time in a row. These guys are one of the city’s biggest digital employers, and they’re passionate about bridging skills gaps by bringing more people into the industry – their new £11 million commercial and software academy is proof of that.
But that’s not the only reason they keep coming back – they also have a host of jobs to fill, as Sky Betting & Gaming Chief Executive Richard Flint told us, “As the city continues to develop a reputation for its fast growing digital sector, we believe the fair can help demonstrate why it is such a great city to build a career in, and we’re looking forward to highlighting some of the exciting roles we have from across Sky Betting & Gaming.”
It’s not just big names though. You’ll have a chance to meet some of the smaller start-ups that make Leeds’ tech scene unique, like blind dating app JigTalk and alarm specialists Cocoon, whose Subsound® technology is set to revolutionise the way we protect our homes. This diversity is what makes Leeds such an exciting place to work. “There is complete and utter choice of who you can work for,” Amy De-Balsi, Founder of Leeds Digital Job Fair and Herd Job Forum, told us. “You can work for start-ups, small businesses, large corporates, all doing really exciting projects, and with the industry booming, you can pick where you want to go.”
As well as the vast array of businesses exhibiting, all of which have jobs to fill right now, there will also be talks from industry leaders and experts, including Google, Leeds Beckett University and the Women in Tech panel, who are hoping to inspire more women to go into the industry. This time, they’re also introducing a Herd Hub, a special area where you can get careers advice and help with your CV from the folk at FruitionIT, and a new ‘A Day In The Life Of A…’ soapbox, which will give you an insight into the different careers on offer through a series of talks from local experts.
