Imagine being able to see a GP anytime, anywhere – that’s the new reality for people in Leeds.
Right now, video chats are a way of life, but The Light Surgery was using them long before COVID-19 swept across the UK. They wanted to give patients another way to see their GP by adding video consultations to their existing telephone and face-to-face services. So they partnered with Europe’s largest digital healthcare provider – LIVI.
The Light Surgery, which is part of OneMedicalGroup, already offers a wide range of NHS services. From GP appointments and health coaching to mental health, community midwifery and musculoskeletal medicine, their multi-disciplinary team has been carefully curated to care for the needs of everyone. LIVI is a digital extension of those services.
It’s an app that lets you talk to a GP by video, on your phone or tablet. It’s available seven days a week, including evenings and weekends, so you can get an appointment when it suits you. And because they have a team of doctors at their disposal, all GMC-registered just like your usual GP, you can see someone the same day, often within minutes.
For most of us, this is a game-changer. No more missing work, no more hot-footing it across town for an appointment – just pick up your phone and see a doctor anytime, anywhere. It’s easy too. You can sign up in minutes, make an appointment just as fast and give your doctor access to your records with the tick of a box, so they see your whole medical history.
The light Surgery is tapping into a behavioural shift. As a society, we’re becoming more and more accustomed to accessing services through our phones – so why not healthcare? It’s a no brainer. Not only is it quicker and easier for patients, but it can also improve efficiency and reduce pressure on the NHS, so everyone gets better care.
That’s the beauty of LIVI – even if you don’t use it, you’ll still benefit. As more people use the service, and thousands already do, it’ll free up appointments, so patients with ongoing conditions, who need that continuity of care, will find it easier to see their GP in person or over the phone. They’re not cutting back on those real-world appointments, they’re just giving you an option.
And for most minor everyday conditions, LIVI is perfect. Coughs, colds, tummy bugs, even rashes and eye infections – as long as you don’t need a physical examination, they can help. If you need a prescription, they’ll send it straight to your local pharmacy, so you can pick it up when it suits you – and of course, they can review your prescription if you need a repeat too.
Needless to say, the service has been invaluable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Doctors surgeries across the country have been forced to switch to video appointments, but The Light Survery was already doing it, so the transition was painless. Thousands of patients are now using LIVI from home as we all come together to slow the spread of the virus and protect the NHS.
LIVI is free to all patients registered with The Light Surgery and they’re taking on new patients. You can register online – you’ll need to show them your ID in-person to complete the process, but because of COVID-19, you won’t need to do this until it’s safe. In the meanwhile, you’ll get access to all their services, including LIVI.
Once registered, just download the LIVI app, select the practice and sign up. Again, you’ll need ID to complete your registration, but this time it’s just a picture. When it comes to making an appointment, you can request one as soon as possible or choose a convenient time, and you’ll get a notification before your appointment to remind you to sign in. It’s that easy.
