It’s good to have healthy options when you’re dining out. And the good news is, these 10 restaurants and cafes don’t sacrifice flavour when they serve up the good stuff – it’s nutritious and nourishing grub that tastes amazing. From vibrant Japanese salads to aromatic bowls of ramen and all things lean, green and clean, these are the best places for a healthy lunch, brunch or dinner in Leeds.



Wolfox is a cool-as-you-like cafe that roasts wonderful organic coffee and, if you can get past the tempting array of brownies and cronuts, serves up a healthy brunch and lunch too. Why not put some pep in your step with a smoothie? Glowing combines berries, dates, banana, açai, coconut water and chia seeds for the perfect start to the day. Their healthy bowls are packed full of goodness – overnight oats will give you slow-release energy and are topped with fibre and protein-rich flax seeds, while the Mermaid Bowl couples a blend of banana and blue spirulina smoothie with fresh fruits. Delicious and beneficial? Yes!

There’s nothing wrong with the flavour-packed ramen bowls at House of Fu – they’re an invigorating meal on their own – but the most virtuous choice at this fast-but-good food joint is a Super Bowl. You’ll get all of your 5-a-day if you scoff the Market Bowl, with pak choi, kale, avocado, apple and tenderstem broccoli accompanying sesame and seasoned rice. It gets a nice umami hit from the furikake sprinkles showered on top, so there’s no slacking on flavour. The mighty California Bowl is another winner – nori-cured salmon adorns cucumber, tomato, edamame, spring onions, rice and house pickles.

The shelves at Itsu are a technicolour array of tempting goodness, which means it’s not just popular for takeaways but also one of the most inviting healthy restaurants in Leeds city centre. The dishes all come with calorie counts, making it easy to watch what you eat – the Detox Miso Noodle Soup, for example, is just 177 calories and contains iodine, calcium and vitamin B6. There are vividly coloured salads, such as the Salmon Superfood, packed with Omega 3, crunchy broccoli and iron-rich spinach. The sushi is freshly prepared and can be washed down with invigorating vegetable or fruit smoothies.

Indian food might conjure images of sauces laden with cream, breads and other things you probably want to avoid on a health kick, but not at Rola Wala. The menu here is packed with healthy options that prove the most energising and rejuvenating food can be spiced to perfection. You can build your own rice, cauliflower and salad bowls, or start with a naan roll if you’re not carb-dodging. After that, add ingredients like red channa dal with nutrient-friendly lentils or Keralan chickpea for all the fuller-for-longer protein you need. They only use fresh ingredients, so you get all the flavour without losing any of the goodness.

Who knew that healthy eating could be fun? At Bulgogi Grill, you do a lot of the cooking yourself – there’s a Korean-style BBQ grill built into your table. Here, grilling is more novelty than chore, especially if you’re watching what you eat because you can control exactly what you have for dinner. Will it be lean pork, prawn scented with lemon juice or beef with the unmistakable hit of sesame oil? Order the Special Set Menu and you’ll also get sea bass, tuna and swordfish. After cooking, you wrap it up in a lettuce leaf with rice, veggies, pickles and more, then choose whether or not to plunge it into one of the dips.

Eating at Issho feels like a real treat, so it might come as a surprise to learn that they serve some of the best healthy food in Leeds. The chefs here are masters at delighting the tastebuds, even with the simplest-sounding dish – simple dishes, like a tomato salad, are elevated by the creamy (and 100% vegan) whipped tofu accompaniment, with a crunchy texture from the puffed rice. The sushi and sashimi is superb, packed with Omega 3 and carb-free to boot. With plenty of seafood on the menu, you can avoid animal fats with ease, and the Vegetable Zen Roll is a parcel of wholesome wonder that demands to be tried.

Grab lunch, brunch or dinner at Eat Your Greens and you’ll be eating the freshest possible food. It’s all about farm-to-fork – the ingredients are organic and you can even pick up groceries here. Lunch options include a crunchy, protein-rich chickpea and roasted carrot sandwich, or a Vegan Bowl that’s built on from the same two ingredients, but adds rainbow pickles, hummus and salad leaves for a low-calorie, high-vitamin alternative. The pick of the dinner small plates is the marinated sardines, packed with Omega 3, as well as vitamin D and B-12. The Super Seeded Porridge promises superior superfood brunch.

Best known as a city centre bar and meeting place, Banyan hides its light under a bushel – this Leeds favourite is also quite the healthy restaurant if you order well. Their Firecracker Chicken Salad pulls off the tricky balancing act of huge flavour and low carbs. Lean chicken breast is coupled with mixed leaves, mange tout and shredded carrot, studded with peanuts, rich in protein, magnesium and minerals. Meanwhile, the vegetarian and gluten-free Revitalise Bowl lives up to its name, mixing red and golden beets with quinoa, peppers, tomatoes, roast butternut squash and halloumi with a superfood dressing.

The food served at Comptoir Libanais is as vibrant and colourful as the room itself, a riot of Middle Eastern and Lebanese hues and flavours. Even better news, it’s good for you too! The tagines deliver sumptuous slow-cooked savour, but with wholesome staples such as chickpeas, aubergines and tomatoes in the mix. Mezze salads pop and zing in your mouth – brought to life by the pomegranate molasses dressing in the Fattoush and the copious mint and chopped parsley in the Tabbouleh. With low-cal food like this, it doesn’t feel like you’ve been short-changed on taste, so you can be healthy with no regrets.

The rather glamorous Grand Pacific, tucked away in the Queens Hotel, maybe not be the most obvious healthy restaurant in Leeds, but you’re going to want to try it. The menu is jam-packed with dishes that work for all kinds of diets. From the appetisers, tuna tataki melds low-fat fish with mango sambal and sesame seeds, before a crispy duck salad dances on the tongue. Get your necessary nutrients from a main of roast cod loin with spinach and curry-spiced lentils, or opt for the king oyster mushroom dashi with veg gyoza and baby kale. This is high-quality eating without sacrifice.
