Take all the best elements of a bar and what do you get? This gem.

Melodie 71 is just what Kirkstall was missing. Painted in a fiery orange, the self-proclaimed European-style café bar will have definitely caught your eye if you’ve ever found yourself driving down Kirkstall Road, but have you actually paid it a visit? If not, you’re welcome – consider this your formal introduction to your new go-to spot for Friday night drinks.

Surprisingly, it took me a few months after its opening to go down and check it out, despite only living a ten minute walk away. And so, as the anticipation of the weekend washed over us, I gathered the troops and we headed down, thirsty for good drinks, good music and good times.

What immediately struck me – and what kept me coming back – is the cosy atmosphere the bar has managed to curate. Come night, the lights are dimmed, candles are placed at the centre of each table and the murmur of chatter washes over the venue… accompanied by an epic soundtrack, of course.

From their booth in the corner, live DJs command the bar pretty much every day of the week, and trust me when I say the range of music knows no bounds. One night could see the revellers grooving to the very best of Americana and the country blues, while acid jazz and soul is the port of call the next. The outdoor speaker in the beer garden means you’ll never miss a minute of the fun.

And, yes, if you’re wondering if there’s an irresistible drinks offering to match, you’d be correct. The stacked shelves behind the bar feature much-loved liquors from the likes of Wolfe Bros and more, just begging to be shaken up into a tasty cocktail.

I might be biased, but the Spicy Margarita is one of my favourites in Leeds. You’ll be asked how spicy you want it on a level of 1 to 10 (an 8 for me, please), before deciding upon a rim of your choice – will it be salt or tajin? Half and half is the real sweet spot if you ask me.

Elsewhere, signature concoctions like the Melodie 71 gin spritz are light and refreshing, served with a slice of grapefruit and a sprig of thyme. Espresso Martinis are a perfectly good option, too, serving up a kick of caffeine to keep the night going.

More into your beers? You’ll still be well looked after. Mahou, Guinness, Camden Hells lager and more all flow from the taps, but I always go for a Steigl. Served in a stein which has been kept in the freezer, it’s crisp, cold and delicious – everything you want in a beer.

While there’s no full food offering just yet (watch this space), the bar top is adorned with homemade sausage rolls, both vegetarian and meat, with cakes, bags of crisps and more. You might even find a Tunnocks Teacake or two.

And what better to keep you company than a shelf full of board games? Cards are obviously a classic and perfect for larger groups (I’ve even had strangers join in on games before!), while a vintage edition of Trivial Pursuit promises to put you and your pals to the test.

Melodie 71 has quickly become Kirkstall’s go-to neighbourhood bar, and for good reason. It’s refreshingly original, with its own unique vibe, never trying to mimic other Leeds spots. I could – and have – spent an entire evening there. Why not see for yourself this weekend?
