Afternoon tea is a quintessential British treat that many of us will have missed during lockdown. But miss it no longer, because a host of local cafes are making sure you can feast on tea and cake in the comfort of your own home. From the traditional to the creative, the sweet to the savoury, this is how to sate your mid-afternoon munchies during lockdown.
Le Chalet. You can get afternoon tea with a French twist delivered your door. You’ll get two sandwiches, a selection of traditional canapés, two cakes, a scone with clotted cream and jam, a macaroon and a cold drink. It’s £16 each and you can add a bottle of wine for £8 or a bottle of prosecco for £14. Delivery is free within seven miles of LS1 or 50p per mile outside the boundary.
Cafe Espresso. This Black Moor cafe is doing its delicious afternoon treats to take away. Start with a selection of four sandwiches, followed by carrot cake, a cherry scone with jam and a chocolate brownie. It’s £18.95 for two people and available for collection from 11am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. You need to give them 48 hours notice, so get in there early.
CC’s Cakes Leeds. If you’re close to Horsforth and want a scrumptious afternoon tea, CC’s will bring one to you. You’ll get finger sandwiches, three savouries, three sweet treats, brownie bites, seasonal fruit and a scone with jam and cream for £10. They also do kids versions for £5. It’s open for deliveries 7 days a week, but you need to order at least 24 hours ahead.
Sebby’s Deli. Sebby’s afternoon tea is one of the best in Leeds. This Headingley cafe will make you up a selection of sandwiches on sourdough bread and serve it alongside three baked sweet treats, a fruit scone and your choice of loose leaf tea or ground coffee. It’s £15 each and available for collection from 9am to 3pm, Wednesday to Sunday.
Gray’s of Rothwell. Gray’s are putting together afternoon tea boxes for you to collect and enjoy at home. Their adults version includes homemade sandwiches, freshly baked cakes and a scone with a hot drink for £15 per person. But they also do a smaller, kids version for £8.50. It’s available for collection from 12pm to 1.30pm, Thursday to Saturday.
The Billing Tea Room. This quaint little cafe has a big reputation for afternoon tea and now you can get it at home. There’s a traditional version with finger sandwiches, cakes and scones or a gentleman’s version with pork pies, fruitcake and cheese. Afternoon tea is £13 for one or £24 for two. It’s available for delivery or collection from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday.
Little Dumplings Cakes. Every afternoon tea box from Little Dumplings Cakes is gluten-free. You’ll get a selection of ham, egg mayo, tuna mayo and cheese sandwiches on brown or seeded gluten-free bread, complete with savouries, scones, fruit and cakes. It’s £13.50 per person and available for delivery. Stocks are always very limited, so you’ll have to be quick.
