When it comes to cheese, Leeds has absolutely nailed it, as these gooey, delicious dishes prove…
We’ve scoured the city’s finest eateries to uncover the most decadent, indulgent and downright delectable cheese-centric dishes in Leeds. We’re talking molten pots of fondue, oozy Polish pierogis and gooey goat’s cheese cooked in three very different ways. Grab a fork and get stuck in.
Raclette at L’Art du Fromage
L’Art du Fromage is a cheese-loving pop-up restaurant that takes over Le Chalet on Friday and Saturday nights. The star of the show is their raclette. It turns up at your table as a chunk of cheese and a mini grill – cook it yourself and watch as it turns wonderfully gooey. Once it’s done, pour it over the potatoes, charcuterie and cornichons, then tuck in.
L’Art du Fromage, Le Chalet, 31-32 Park Row, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 5JD.
Queso de Cabra e Hinojo at Ambiente
You’ve got to try the Queso de Cabra e Hinojo at Ambiente. They breadcrumb a chunk of soft, mild goat’s cheese – when you cut in, a stream of oozy cheesy goodness will flow out. It’s drizzled with honey, and the sweetness cuts through the tartness of the cheese, then they throw on braised fennel and beetroot crisps to finish the job with a satisfying crunch.
Ambiente, 36-38 The Calls, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 7EW.
The Goat’s Cheese Wrap at Taste
Taste don’t waste an inch of their Goat’s Cheese Wrap – the hefty tortilla is absolutely rammed full of oozy, cheesy deliciousness and any space left is taken up by the perfect accompaniments. It comes with sizzling roasted veggies and a dollop of sweet chilli jam, before the whole wrap is toasted, so that the cheese goes all soft and gooey.
Taste, 3 Butcher Street, Saw Mill Yard, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS11 5WH.
Pierogi Ruskie at Smak!
Imagine a proper Polish pierogi filled with oozy cheese. That’s what awaits at Smak! The Pierogi Ruskie is loaded with smoked country cheese and soft chunks of potato, giving you a gooey sensation that’s surprisingly filling. Each one is handmade to a family recipe, handed down through generations, and they’re so good, one just won’t be enough.
Smak! The Polish Kitchen, 372 Kirkstall Road, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS4 2HQ.
Mac Balls at Almost Famous
Goodness, gracious great balls of… mac and cheese! That’s right, Almost Famous has nailed mac and cheese. They deep fry meatball-sized chunks of cheesy macaroni pasta smothered in their homemade cheese sauce. The result? A crisp outer shell that gives way to a soft, dreamy ball of goodness on the inside. Dip them in the bacon bacon mayo that comes on the side, and you might just forget about their burgers altogether.
Almost Famous, Alexander Court, Great George Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 3AL.
The Chorizo Monsieur at Friends of Ham
It’s time to tuck into a toastie with a French twist because Friends of Ham’s Chorizo Monsieur is full of gooey, cheesy goodness. You’ll get two thick slices of bread topped and stuffed with creamy cheddar béchamel sauce that stretches into gooey strings with every bite. Instead of the usual ham, they use a rich and smoky chorizo that adds a nice kick to your grilled cheese sarnie. This really is cheese heaven.
Friends of Ham, 4-8 New Station Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 5DL.
Goat’s Cheese Tart at 2 Oxford Place
2 Oxford Place has the perfect Goat’s Cheese Tart. Their generous wheel of goat’s cheese is served warm, so it’s soft and giving as you break your fork into it. It comes with wild mushrooms on top of a savoury tart filled with baby beetroot, watercress and a chilli ketchup which helps to cut through the richness of the cheese, adding a fiery sweetness that will bring your palate to life.
