Calling all gin-lovers – it’s time to go on a journey of gin discovery, one bar at a time.
Leeds has gin festivals galore, but this is a little bit different. The Gin Journey is a bar-hopping crawl of Leeds that will see you whisked from one bar to another in a luxurious Gini-bus. You’ll try a different drink in every bar and learn a little something about gin too. What’s not to love?
The Gin Journey started life in London in 2013, but it’s taken founder Leon Dalloway five years to bring it to Leeds. “I used to be a bartender and I worked in a distillery, so I learned a lot about gin. Back then, I hosted masterclasses and I really enjoyed the combination of teaching people about gin and making tasting drinks, so I decided to start doing it on my own,” he told us. “We rolled around London for a while until we got a good name for ourselves, but I used to live in Manchester and my partner Kate thought it would work in Liverpool too, so we tried it.”
The rest, as they say, is history. They now have successful tours in London, Manchester and Liverpool, each of which takes inspiration from the city itself, so you won’t just learn about gin, you’ll also discover a new side to Leeds – a new, gin-obsessed side, of course. In fact, you’ll get the chance to try some of Yorkshire’s finest tipples on your travels, including our personal favourite, Masons Yorkshire Gin.
“The Gin Journey is unique because it teaches you a lot about our history with gin. You’ll learn about gin, not just from Yorkshire, but from all over the UK.” Dalloway explained. “It’s certainly a fun way to spend your Saturday.”
They’re bringing The Gin Journey to Leeds this March with a tour every Saturday, from 2pm to 6:30pm. It’ll start at The Alchemist and finish at The Domino Club, stopping at The Hedonist Project, Pintura and a secret bar along the way. You’ll try a different gin at each bar, with a 10ml sample to introduce you to the drink in its raw form, before you enjoy one of their expertly made cocktails. Each one will be different, taking inspiration from the bar you visit – Pintura, for example, will be serving up a classic Spanish G&T in a copper cup.
Come rain or shine, the tour must go on – but you won’t need an umbrella because this is one bar crawl that doesn’t involve any walking. You’ll be whisked away in a chauffeur-driven Mercedes minibus, and as you travel, your guide, Cocktail Kate, will tell you a thing or two about Britain’s favourite spirit.
The Gin Journey will take place from 2pm to 6:30pm every Saturday in March. Places are limited and cost £50 a pop, including a 10ml sample and a cocktail in every bar.
