Not all sandwiches are created equal, but these lunchtime treats are the best of the best.
Tired of the same old feed? Need a wrap that’ll rock your world? You’re in luck, because we’ve rounded up the most mind-blowing sandwiches Leeds has to offer. Baguettes, flatbreads, even open sarnies – if they’re good enough, they’re on this list. So the next time you’re stuck for lunch ideas, make sure you try out one of these stellar eats.
Water Lane Boathouse – Beef Pastrami and Cheese
This sizeable sarnie at Water Lane Boathouse is a must-try. It’s a refined take on a New York sandwich – they’ve ditched the corned beef for an extra-generous helping of lean beef pastrami and Swiss cheese. Add the all-important pickles, tangy sauerkraut and creamy Russian dressing into the mix and you’ve got a distinctly American sandwich combo. The whole lot is squeezed between two thick slices of bread and served with a fresh side salad.
Water Lane Boathouse, Canal Wharf, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS11 5PS.
Fat Annie’s – Philly Cheesesteak
It might say ‘quality hot dogs’ on the sign, but Fat Annie’s does something even more special – Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches. A soft toasted ciabatta roll gives way to strips of tender rump steak, tangy caramelised onion and the crunch of green peppers, all smothered in oodles of melted American cheese. Pair it with a portion of their hot golden chips and a cold drink, then find a pew in the colourful street food hall to devour your lunch.
Fat Annie’s, Leeds Kirkgate Market, Kirkgate, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 7HY.
Taste – Goats Cheese Wrap
Taste is a lunchtime gem and the jewel in their crown is the hot Greek wrap. You’ll get goat’s cheese, roasted vegetables and a dollop of chilli jam, all folded into a fresh tortilla and toasted. Once the cheese reaches just the right level of gooey, it’s sliced in half and served up with a portion of ready salted crisps. You can either take it with you, or pull up a chair in their minimalist cafe – full of natural wood, steel and exposed brickwork.
Taste, 3 Butcher Street, Saw Mill Yard, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS11 5WH.
Caracas Grill – Galipan Pepito
Carnivores, we’ve just found your new favourite sandwich spot. Caracas Grill is an incredible Venezuelan BBQ joint pairing fresh bread and tender meat. Our favourite has to be the Galipan Pepito – you’ll get sizzling slices of chicken and pork sausage layered into a fresh white baguette with tomato, mixed leaves and caramelised onions. Make sure you’re hungry when you tackle it, as it’s packed to bursting – much like you’ll be when you’ve finished.

Crust and Crumb – Brunch Stack
Does an open sandwich count as a sandwich? When it’s piled high with delectable eats, we’ll happily include it. Step forward Crust and Crumb’s Brunch Stack. It starts with fresh sourdough toast from Bondgate Bakery, then a layer of smashed avocado – topped with a soft poached egg, toasted halloumi, roast vine tomatoes and crispy bacon, before it’s finished with a drizzle of basil oil. It might sound like a naughty treat, but it’s actually surprisingly healthy – and well worth a spot on your Leeds sandwich bucket list.

Tribeca – Chicken and Chorizo Sandwich
Tribeca is an underground cafe full of tasty treats, from fresh bagels to piping hot coffee and naughty chocolate brownies. But it’s their signature Chicken and Chorizo sandwich that has tongues wagging and for good reason – it’s utterly delicious. Chunks of tender chicken are packed into a crisp ciabatta roll along with slices of spicy chorizo and soft roasted peppers, topped with lashings of pimento mayonnaise. For the full experience, get it to go and enjoy it in Park Square.

Ira B’s – The Grobber
To find that classic New York Deli taste in Leeds, head out to Ira B’s in Roundhay, but trust us, it’s more than worth it for their traditional hot salt beef sandwich on rye bread. The Grobber is made with melt-in-your-mouth brisket, traditionally prepared by brine pickling it for 10 days before cooking. It’s layered between two towering slices of rye with gherkin and mustard. If you can manage it, you can get mounds of potato salad, mixed leaves and coleslaw on the side too.

Brød – Jamaican Jerk Chicken Wrap
If it’s a quick on-the-go lunch you’re after, Brød is the place to go. Their scrumptious Jamaican jerk chicken wrap is served in a soft white tortilla – expect juicy chunks of marinated chicken layered with diced cucumber, salad and chilli, all topped with a dollop of tangy lime chutney for a flavourful punch. It’s a big helping too, so it should keep you full all day long.

La Bottega Milanese – La Piadina Porchetta
La Piadina Porchetta is a little slice of Italian heaven from La Bottega Milanese. A piadina is a traditional thin flatbread made with white flour, olive oil, salt and water then packed with fillings and wrapped up. At La Bottega, it’s best loaded with porchetta, mozzarella and fresh sliced salami. It can be served cold, but it’s best hot with a cup of fresh ground Italian coffee to properly treat your tastebuds.

Sesame – Falafel & Hummus Wrap
Sesame is famed for serving healthy sarnies that taste naughty. When it comes to our bucket list, it has to be their homemade falafel & hummus wrap. The delicate chickpea flavour is perfectly complemented by hearty helpings of fresh falafel, fresh salad and even slices of chicken if you fancy. There’s also a pile of mixed leaves on the side, to make sure you leave with a full belly and a clear conscience.

San Co.co – The CoCo Club
There’s only one sandwich you simply have to try at the tiny San Co.co cafe, and that’s the CoCo Club. The secret to this gem of a sandwich? The light and airy focaccia is baked fresh every day at 5am ready to be cooled, sliced and packed with chicken, egg, bacon and mayo for a whole heap of flavour. It’s even better toasted around the edges, so ask them to pop it on the hot plate for a few minutes and enjoy that extra little crunch.
