From fondue to raclette, the North’s biggest cheese events company is pulling out all the stops for its latest adventure…
Are you dreaming of a cheesy Christmas? Whether you’re bonkers for brie or cuckoo for cheddar, your prayers have been answered! A Night of Festive Cheese is the latest event from Homage2Fromage – across four mouthwatering nights, they’re bringing the stringiest, gooiest and creamiest cheeses to Butler’s Restaurant at Kirkstall Forge for a three-course supper club.
When it comes to cheese feasts, there’s no-one better than Homage2Fromage. Created by partners-in-crime Vickie Rogerson and Nick Copland back in 2011, they’ve gone from 15-person cheddar tastings in Millie’s Deli to attracting over 350 people to their cheese clubs every month. At one point, they even created their own pop-up, the Homage2Fromage Cheese Cafe in the Merrion Centre to explore the tastiest dishes you can make from gooey deliciousness. And now, they’ve used all this experience to create the ultimate combination of cheese dishes, all in one place.
“It’s going to be similar to how we’ve done past events” Vickie told us. “There’s a set menu, so you buy a ticket and you get 3 courses of cheese. Everything is cheese related, and it’s going to be very relaxed, there’s no limit on time. We wanted to create an event that’s for groups of people, where people can come down and have a really lovely night and just enjoy eating together.”
Their new supper club will run from Wednesday 5th December to Saturday 9th December 2018. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with huge sharing boards, piled high with bite-size cheesy masterpieces. There’s the Yorkshire Blue & Honey, where the finest Shepherd’s Purse is mixed with a dab of Harrogate Blue and enrobed in sticky sweetness. Or you could go for their Tete-de-Moine Curls, melt-in-the-mouth swirls of Swiss-French cheese. Want to try a different texture? Enjoy the tangy crunch of Lincolnshire Poacher crisps, before digging into Yellison’s Goats Cheese Mousse with a side of fresh salad leaves.
Once you’ve had your fill of the nibbles, it’s time for the main event. Each table will get a bubbling cauldron of fondue made with a nutty mixture of Comte and Emmental cheese. Served with cornichons, onions, roasted vegetables, crackers and local bread, you can spear it all with a fork and dip it in your tub of molten deliciousness. But the fun doesn’t stop there.
Alongside the fondue, you’ll also get a mountain of new potatoes and bacon, with melted raclette poured over the top. They’re using Ogleshield, a British alpine-style cheese, and to add a dash of theatre, it’ll be poured at your table. To round off your main course, get ready for a whole Baked Camembert, topped with smoked and spiced chorizo (or rosemary and cranberries if you’re veggie). In short, more cheese than you’ve ever had in a single meal before, and it’s glorious, especially as you get to share the experience with a big group.
“The dishes really lend themselves to sharing” Vickie explained. “Whether it’s the raclette or the fondue, you want to enjoy it with friends. We’ve been doing events in Leeds for seven years and we absolutely know that Leeds loves cheese, especially melted cheese. It’s just a great sociable experience.”
It’s a super-filling meal, but make sure you leave room to unwind with coffee and chocolates afterwards. Naturally, there’s a cheesy twist to the petit fours too, with a handful of York Cocoa House Blue Cheese Chocolates alongside Butler’s own ground coffee. These delicate sweet treats mix a little Yorkshire Blue into the truffle, before being coated in dark chocolate and topped with digestive crumb – the mixture of salty and sweet is divine.
Alongside the meal, there’ll be a full bar, with a tailored wine list, as well as beers, spirits and soft drinks. What’s more, if you come as a couple or smaller group, they’re running an un-ticketed walk-in cheese bar, so you can try out the mix of flavours too. Essentially, for just four nights, this quiet corner of Kirkstall is going to be a cheese paradise – and you need to be there.
Homage2Fromage Presents a Night of Festive Cheese will run from Wednesday 5th December to Saturday 9th December 2018. Tickets will cost £35 per person, but are discounted to £30 per person until Friday 16th November 2018. Tables are aimed at groups of 4, 6, 8 and 10.
