Leeds Bags Coveted Michelin Star

Man Behind The Curtain

No more will folk say that Yorkshire has more Michelin stars than anywhere outside of London, but Leeds has none – because now we do.

The Man Behind the Curtain has today been awarded a Michelin Star. It’s the only new restaurant to be added to Yorkshire’s ranks in the 2015 Michelin Guide, taking the count up to six. Michael O’Hare’s unique concept restaurant joins the likes of The Yorke Arms in Pateley Bridge, The Black Swan in Oldstead, The Star in Harome, The Box Tree in Ilkley and The Pipe and Glass in Beverley – fine company indeed.

This is the first Michelin Star awarded to a Leeds restaurant since 1995, when Pool Court bagged the coveted prize with Jeff Baker at the helm. They held it for 10 years, taking us up to 2005 – and exactly 10 years later, we’ve managed to bag ourselves another.

That’s right, we’re all basking in the glory of O’Hare’s latest accomplishment – because bagging a Michelin star is a huge accolade for Leeds, and it’s going to make some serious headway when it comes to positioning Leeds as the food and drink capital of the North.

There’s no doubt that The Man Behind the Curtain deserves its Michelin Star. The menu at the Leeds restaurant is a culinary masterpiece, using locally-sourced ingredients to create new and unusual combinations that work in a way you’d never expect.

From the raw langoustine, which is marinated in honey and lavender, then served with jamón ibérico and grated frozen apple, to the violet ice cream with potato and vanilla custard, salt and vinegar rice and beetroot vinegar – it’s fair to say, whatever you choose, you’ll never have anything quite like it.

It’s an experience you wouldn’t expect to find hidden within the confines of Flannels, on Vicar Lane, but the location certainly doesn’t seem to have put anyone off – including the Michelin judges.

If you haven’t been to The Man Behind the Curtain, get your booking in quick, because now that it has a Michelin Star, it’s going to be very popular indeed.
