This is your new go-to lunchtime joint.

Eataliano

Love Italian food? Grab a bite at Eataliano where you can tuck into authentic sandwiches, pizza and pasta boxes.

Eataliano is a labour of love for owners Eric Lee, Angela Lee and Gail Bellhouse. They’ve spent years travelling to Italy to sample the cuisine in food-loving cities like Florence, Rimini, Sorrento, Naples and Rome – and now, having worked in the food industry for over a decade, they’ve brought all those delicious flavours to the heart of Leeds with a new eatery that specialises in lunchtime eats.

You’ll find their petite subterranean venue on Britannia Street in the city’s bustling Business District. It’s been styled by local interior designers Tareen & Tareen, who’ve merged rustic with modern to give it an Italian feel with a clean, black and white finish. There are two tables to sit at, but this is largely a takeaway place, so when you arrive, just head to the counter to make your order.

You can start your day with sandwiches served in a soft sub roll. They do everything from poached eggs and cheese to ‘The Italian Job’, a mix of sausage, pancetta and egg. Their main offering comes later in the day though, as they wanted to be able to provide this part of Leeds with an authentic Italian lunch.

They serve all manner of authentic Italian sandwiches, each one made to order from an extensive menu of fillings. You can go for the Calabria, made with ‘nduja sausage, or the Polpette, which is filled with beef and pork meatballs topped with their homemade Pomodoro sauce. Whatever you choose, you’ll have total control. Pick your bread, with a choice of Italian baguettes, focaccia or piadinas, then add Italian cheese or mozzarella, before throwing on a host of salad options and sauce to finish.

It’s not just sandwiches, though. You can get a generous 11 inch focaccia Romana pizza in all manner of guises – take the Big Roma for instance, it’s topped with porchetta, roasted peppers, truffle oil and sliced Italian cheese. Fancy something lighter? They do all of their sandwich fillings as salads, or you can make your own pasta boxes. Choose a sauce, with everything from arrabiata to carbonara, then add one of seven pastas and pile on meat and veggies.

If you need a few top tips, Eric gave us his personal recommendations, “The Pollo Milanese sandwich is our take on the classic veal Milanese dish, made with crispy breaded mini chicken fillets, fried to order and put in a sandwich. We also have a range of starters and the star of the show has to be the Sicilian Arancini. A traditional large cone of risotto rice filled with ragu, veg and cheese, coated in breaded crumbs and fried.”

Still hungry? They have oodles of sides. You can dig into Parmesan and Truffle Fries, Calamari or Parmesan Chicken Goujons. But make sure you leave room for dessert, because they’ve also got Giant Profiteroles. Finish with a traditional Italian coffee, specially imported from Milan, or grab one of their cans of San Pellegrino – they’re not the ones you usually find in the UK, they’ve got the full array of Italian flavours on offer, including the Chinotti Black Orange.

Whether it’s breakfast or lunch, to eat in or enjoy on-the-go, Eataliano provides a little taste of Italy – Pop in and give it a try.
