Eh? Pizza Fella have been around for yonks, haven’t they? Well, yes, they have – but now they have new digs on Vicar Lane.
Pizza Fella have been doing the rounds for years, although up until recently, their wood fired Neapolitan pizzas were served up in Claude, a converted Citroen H van. Now, however, they’ve got their own little slice of Leeds, because they’ve opened a new pizzeria on Vicar Lane.
“It just felt like the right time to take our street food business to the next level,” Co-owner and Head Chef Miles Robinson told us. “Casual dining is on the increase and a lot of that growth has been with the independents. And who doesn’t love pizza? Especially in an independent, casual dining setting. Hopefully we have a winning formula.”
It’s a chance for them to do more of what they love – which means pizza, pizza and more pizza. Miles developed his love of proper Neapolitan pizza in 2014 when he travelled to Naples and trained at La Figlia Del Presidente Pizzeria. He brought his new obsession back home with him, bringing the Italian classic to Yorkshire – and the rest, as they say, is history.
“We’re not trying to be an Italian restaurant,” Miles confessed. “We’re a pizzeria which benchmarks our pizzas against the best in Naples and brings that level of quality to Leeds – in terms of oven, dough, the best mozzarella and San Marzano tomatoes, all the essentials for an authentic Margherita. Mix that with some proper Yorkshire charm and you’ve got Pizza Fella.”
Now they’re starting a new chapter, with a permanent eatery that will serve up a menu of seven wood-fired pizzas, each handmade using Italian Caputo flour, San Marzano tomatoes and Fior di Latte. All of their toppings take inspiration from Italy, but they try to make the most of local British producers wherever they can.
Alongside the pizza, they’ll have antipasti boards, olives and salads, but save room for pudding, because they’re also serving up award-winning Gelato from La Gelateria, a small independent in London who’ve won several Great Taste awards for their ice cream.
It may be a pizzeria, but it’s not all about the food. They’ve got the kind of drinks menu you’re more likely to find in a bar. You can choose from a handpicked selection of Italian wines, try one of the revolving craft beers or indulge in a premium lager – and if you’re off the plonk, they have soft drinks from Square Root London with coffee from local favourites North Star.
The new eatery has been specially kitted out with a Gozney Napoli 1250 wood-fired oven, and it takes centre stage in the venue, as Miles explained, “We’ve kept it minimal, so the oven is the star of the show. We’ve got Robin Day chairs and reclaimed scaffolding planks for tables designed by a local carpenter, and we’ll have a wall dedicated to showcasing local artists’ work. It’s fairly simple. It’s more about the pizza.”
