Coffee, cocktails and organic produce – introducing SIX on Wellington Street.

SIX Restaurant

SIX is a new addition to Wellington Street, bringing together a health-focussed restaurant with a cafe and a roastery.

It was never Fabio Lauro’s plan to run a chain of restaurants. He’s an interior designer who made a living renovating empty buildings across the UK into restaurants and selling them on – but when he created the first SIX, in Brighton, he just couldn’t let it go, so now he’s done a second one. SIX isn’t just a restaurant, though – it’s a cafe and roastery, with a focus on serving up quality, healthy dishes made with locally-sourced organic ingredients.

It’s because of their love of organic produce that they’ve arrived in Leeds. They’ve used The Organic Pantry, near Tadcaster, since they opened their Brighton branch, and when Fabio came up to get a tour of all their farms, he fell in love with Leeds, “I saw the potential up here, and I called the guys in the south, and I said, I think I am going to move to Leeds! It’s beautiful!”

So now they’re here, what can you expect from SIX? Well, the cafe and the restaurant have their own distinct styles, but they’re still connected – the cafe’s relaxed with neutral colours, vibrant plants and small tables, while the restaurant has a more refined, luxurious vibe that’s brought to life by leafy decorations that hang from exposed brick walls.

The lush decor will give you a hint at what’s on the menu – Fabio describes it as ‘a carefully designed plant-based health food menu’. This is farm to fork dining at its best and they can tell you where every single ingredient has come from, whether it’s The Organic Pantry or one of their other carefully chosen suppliers. And they’ve used those ingredients to create European-inspired dishes that are not only damned tasty, but also very good for you – which means eating at SIX will never have to be a cheat day.

You can start with the likes of Courgette and Basil Soup, Organic Chicken Satay and Crab & Lobster Ravioli. That’s followed by a choice of just ten mains but they’re of the highest quality – you’ve got Chicken Milanese, Avocado & Falafel Salad and the Hot Bhudda Bowl, which is their signature dish, a bowl of organic steamed rice, topped with vegetables, a spicy sauce and your choice of tofu or chicken.

Fabio has his own favourites though, and he’s only too happy to share them, “For starter I would have, for definite, the aubergine fitters with humous, they are coated in a gluten-free rice flour and then honey, it is stunning. For the main, the duck confit is another must, it’s an organic leg of duck and cooked in its own fat for about 12 hours. We keep it marinated in buffalo for about two days before we even consider serving it, it’s full of really fresh, stunning flavours. Dessert has to be what we call the Melting Moment, a chocolate fondant made in-house and it’s served with a pistachio or coconut ice cream.”

The food is delicious but what can you wash it down with? They’ve gone organic again, with a wine list of ethically-made labels from France, Spain, Italy and even Kent. They’ve got all your favourite grapes – think pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc and Malbec, as well as an array of gins, sourced from the UK and beyond, a small selection of craft beers and a cocktail menu.

SIX isn’t just a restaurant, though. It’s a cafe too which opens every morning at 7.30am, bar Sunday when it opens at 10am. Coffee is something which they do very well here. SIX has its own dedicated roastery, where they roast their own single origin, 100% certified organic Arabica beans every day.

As well as the coffee, you can choose from a range of organic herbal teas, from chamomile to wild berry. Want something a little more refreshing? They have seven cold-pressed juices, seven superfood smoothies and two healing shots, all designed to give you a much-needed boost. They’ll go down a treat with one of their breakfasts, which range from Hot Brunch Bowls to Banana Bread, Waffles and Pancakes with Bacon.

SIX is an interesting addition to Leeds that will really come into its own in the New Year – and not just because we’ll all be on a new health kick. They’re also launching their new cocktail bar in January, making this a truly multi-faceted venture. Check it out next time you’re over this side of town – we think you’ll like it.
