Best known for its Mexican small plates, Pinche Pinche’s brilliant burritos are worth visiting for on their own. They have six to choose from, with something for every palate. Their classic is the marinated free range masa fried chicken, but why not mix it up? The Baja-style fish, al pastor pork, slow-cooked brisket, al pastor cauli or marinated plantain offer tasty alternatives. Load yours with rice, beans, salad, cheese, sour cream, Mexican pickle, salsa and watercress for an almighty bite. Don’t fancy the tortilla? Each one has a naked option.

Pinche Pinche, 116a Harrogate Road, Chapel Allerton, Leeds, LS7 4NY. Their burritos start from £11.95.

Neon Cactus

It’s a late night party bar, but if you pop by Neon Cactus through the day, you’ll find this Leeds favourite doubles as a darn tasty Mexican cantina. Alongside tacos and nachos, the burritos are a cornerstone of their mighty menu. Decisions, decisions – the carne asada beef packs a punch, while the birria chicken and the chipotle cauliflower are just as delicious. Passing by in the morning? Their heaving breakfast burrito will make lunch redundant. Whatever you go for, it comes loaded with Mexican rice, pico de gallo, salsa verde and beans.

They may be a big name, but Tortilla’s burritos are the real deal. They’ve truly mastered their craft and it’s all about what you want. First, it’s standard or large – how hungry are you? Then you make your rice call – coriander or tomato? For your protein, choose from pork carnitas, grilled chicken, barbacoa beef, grilled veg or vegan chilli, all covered in special marinades. Top it with beans, peppers and onions, then select your salsa, guac, sour cream and cheese. Feeling dangerous? Throw on some jalapeños – if you can handle the heat, you won’t regret it.

Tortilla, 401 Trinity Leeds, Albion Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 5AY. Their burritos start from £6.20.

The Mexican Pilgrim is a humble street food truck, but with burritos as good as theirs, it’s worth seeking out whenever it’s at Central Square, Wellington Place or Leeds Dock. Expect a jam-packed, delightfully messy tortilla with fillings changing regularly. Usually, you’ll have a choice of chicken breast in their own spice blend, pork carnitas in a homemade red wine & chipotle BBQ sauce and marinated Mexican fish. Veggie? Fear not, they’ve always got you covered. Their burritos are filled with refried beans, romaine lettuce, guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo.

The Mexican Pilgrim can be found at Central Square, Wellington Place or Leeds Dock throughout the week. Their burritos start from around £5.

Sabroso Street

Their menu is mostly made for sharing, but you won’t want to give anyone a bite of your burrito at Sabroso Street. Theirs are the stuff burrito dreams are made of – you get a hefty wheat tortilla, stuffed with all the classics, from guacamole and sour cream to black beans, cheese and rice. But what about the filling? You’ve got four to choose from and it’s some quartet – carnivores can drool over Mexican chicken, pulled Mexican pork or barbacoa beef, while veggies can try the pulled jackfruit. A margarita will wash them down perfectly.

Sabroso Street, 10 Town Street, Farsley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS28 5LD. Their burritos start from £9.50.
