Crisp, golden and oozing with cheese. What’s not to love about these toasties?
Thick slices of bread, lashings of butter and oh-so-much melted cheese – the city’s grilled cheese sarnies are worth seeking out. Whether you keep yours simple with cheddar cheese and onion or experiment with spicy buffalo chicken strips and a double hit of cheese, there are loads of delectable options for you to snaffle in Leeds. The question is – which one will you try first?
Drunken Cheese Toastie – LS6 Cafe
LS6 keep their cheese toasties simple but oh-so-delicious. Melted cheddar oozes out between two crisp, golden slices of bread. Alongside the cheese, it’s loaded with onions sautéed in beer – yes, beer! The caramelisation creates the perfect sweetness to compliment the mature cheddar. This dish can also be made with non-dairy cheese that’s so gloriously gooey you could mistake it for the real thing – so if you’re vegan, you don’t even need to miss out.
LS6 Cafe, 16 Headingley Lane, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS6 2AS.
Blue Cheese and Onion Toastie – Matt Healy X The Foundry
Ever tried a gourmet cheese toastie? Well now’s your chance. The Foundry will whip you up a melt-in-the-mouth grilled cheese sarnie with their hand-cut beef tartare. It’s seriously indulgent – they toast Yorkshire blue cheese and soft onions between the two crisp and warm slices of brioche. Sweet, tangy and with just the right amount of crunch, it’s a small but mighty bite that’s packed full of flavour. Trust us, this is a must-try for all cheese toastie connoisseurs.
Matt Healy x The Foundry, 1 Saw Mill Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS11 5WH.
‘Kick Ass’ Toastie – Pride & Produce
Salty, sweet and spicy all in one, this ‘Kick Ass’ toastie is jam-packed with flavour. The classic cheese and ham combo gives it the saltiness you expect from a toastie. But things get really exciting when it comes to their chutney. Made with apple, ale and chilli, it adds a sweet but spicy kick to the dish. Finished off with lashings of butter to give it a perfectly golden colour, Pride & Produce has truly mastered the art of the grilled cheese sandwich.
Pride & Produce, 33a Main Street, Garforth, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS25 1DS.
Chorizo Monsieur – Friends of Ham
If you fancy something a little more continental, try Friends of Ham’s Chorizo Monsieur. Like all good Croque Monsieur’s it’s an insanely cheesy dish, with creamy cheddar bechamel bubbling on top and oozing out from inside. But unlike most Croque Monsieur’s, this one swaps out the ham for rich and smoky slices of chorizo, adding an irresistible spicy punch that simply has to be tried.
Friends of Ham, 4-8 New Station Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 5DL.
The Colonel – Alley Cats
Alley Cats have mastered the art of keeping their toasties crisp on the outside but delightfully soft on the inside. Their secret? Extra thick white bread. Sink your teeth into The Colonel, an almighty cheese melt that’s loaded with buffalo chicken strips. The combo of spicy buffalo chicken with creamy melted cheddar and punchy blue cheese sauce make it a real treat for the tastebuds. And if those two cheeses aren’t quite enough for you, it comes with extra cheese sauce on the side for dipping – yum!
Alley Cats, 38 Harrogate Road, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS7 4LA.
