Mans Market

You have to head below ground to find one of the best Chinese restaurants in Leeds, but Mans Market is well worth a subterranean adventure. You’re first hit by a wall of waving cat statues, before walking past the well-stocked bar and into a spacious dining room with a modern Chinese decor. But what will you eat? They specialise in Hong Kong-inspired cuisine, from dim sum classics like pork sui mai and Szechuan tofu to heaving bao buns and sharing pans filled with Mongolian beef and hoisin chicken. Our favourite? We’ve never gone wrong with a mountain of spicy Singapore flat noodles loaded with veg.

Tattu

There’s no Chinese restaurant in Leeds quite like Tattu. The scene is set from the moment you step inside, the dark, atmospheric dining room punctuated with colourful cherry blossom trees, delicate flowers and tattoo-inspired wall decorations. It looks mightily impressive, but that’s trumped by the exquisite food offering that takes Chinese food to new territories. Wagyu beef gyoza sit next to XO scallop skewers and salt & pepper loin ribs, setting you up perfectly for show-stealing mains like Shanghai black cod with hoisin, ginger and lime, or wok-fired angry bird, a fiery plate of fried chicken.

Wen’s Restaurant

There’s no debate – Wen’s is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Leeds. Some would say they’re unrivalled, and we won’t argue. Why? The menu reflects what Chinese people eat at home, so there’s an authenticity you struggle to find elsewhere. Of course, they still serve those Anglo-Cantonese favourites, from black bean to sweet & sour, but delving deeper into the menu while sat in this charming, no-frills dining room will pay off. It promises a proper culinary adventure, from the iconic Wen’s dumplings, made by Mrs Wen herself, to hot poached sliced lamb in chilli oil and Chinese-style bacon with stir-fried celery.

If you want to experience authentic Chinese cuisine in Leeds in an upscale environment, Blue Pavillion is the place for you. Everything from their mirrored walls to the blue leather booths and ornately decorated ceiling screams gourmet before you’ve even looked at the menu. Their dishes are presented with just as much originality and flare, with mouth-watering dim sum platters served in mini mahogany chests and bites of succulent braised pork stacked on cascading chestnut blocks. The style is backed by substance and the delicious dishes will keep you coming back for more. Feeling adventurous? We recommend the steamed Dover sole from the chef’s secret menu.

Sweet Basil Valley

Worlds and cuisines collide at Sweet Basil Valley, a much loved East Asian restaurant between the Leeds suburbs of Yeadon and Rawdon. It looks unassuming from the outside, but inside, it’s all glamour, from the cherry blossom trees to the stylish lighting. The food lives up to its setting, marrying classic Chinese cooking with a medley of Thai favourites, so there should be something for everyone in your party. Soups and appetisers are full of familiar faves – our pick is the salt & pepper soft shell crab. For your mains, you can never go wrong with the roast duck in a soy, plum or orange Cointreau sauce, but our favourite is the sizzling lamb in a Szechuan chilli sauce.

At Tao’s, hot pot construction is treated as a sacred art, and their stylish contemporary restaurant floor is just the place for you to master it. Their team of talented chefs use the freshest, locally sourced ingredients to put together an enticing menu of bona fide Cantonese hot pot and dim sum delights. Choose from their amazing selection of broths then get creative and add whichever meat, seafood, vegetables or sides you fancy. Our fave combination is the Tao Wagyu Sichuan Chilli broth with tender beef, tiger prawns and the mushroom platter. With unlimited dipping sauce at your disposal, it’s only right to throw in a few chive dumplings while you’re at it.

Wawin

Have you heard about the fully-vegan Chinese restaurant in Leeds? Wawin is a no-frills dining room in the heart of Woodhouse where meat-free Chinese cuisine reigns supreme – so much so, even the carnivores will be into it. There’s nothing else quite like it here, because of the lengths they go to to create an authentic Chinese experience but without the meat. Think mock versions of everything from tiger prawns and chicken drumsticks to ham and crispy duck. You can order them with all your favourite combos, from sweet & sour to kung po, but if you want a real taste of Wawin, we love the braised aubergine in the chef’s secret sauce.

This Vicar Lane gem might look unassuming from the outside, but step inside the bustling wood-panelled dining room and get ready to take your tastebuds on a journey across Sichuan. The menu is massive, full of familiar favourites, but it pays to venture off the path – ever tried clam & winter melon soup? Stir-fried aorta? How about hot & spicy frog’s legs? Is it a cafe? Is it a restaurant? Whatever your definition, Noodle House is a must-visit. Why? They make all manner of authentic Chinese dishes that natives and local folk love alike. That’s some feat! Take a seat in the ramshackle seating area in front of the kitchen and get ready for a feast at a pocket-friendly price.
