Bears Pantry

Bears Pantry are bringing their unique approach to breakfast and lunch to Horsforth for the next three months.

Independent catering company Bears Pantry have opened up their first pop-up cafe to show off their rustic cuisine to the public for the very first time. It all started up back in 2014 when owner Sam Pullan saw a hole in the market that his passion for good food could fill. Since then, Bears Pantry has been one of the go-to caterers in Leeds for weddings, events and corporate dos.

But Pullan and his team didn’t just want to keep on doing the same old thing, so they’ve decided to share their tasty wares with the general public too. Their pop-up restaurant is the result, and you’ll find it on Long Row in Horsforth, just opposite The Brownlee Arms. It’s an opportunity for them to meet and chat to their customers, which is something Pullan is really keen to do, “We love seeing and hearing the customer’s reaction when they eat our food and also really listen to constructive feedback. Sometimes with catering the food is dropped off or you’re behind the scenes, so you don’t really know what’s going on.”

So what will you be eating? Well, it depends on when you go. They’re open on Wednesdays and Thursday for lunch between 11am and 3pm and then on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 3pm, throwing breakfast into the mix. Everything they serve is available to takeaway too, in case you’re eating on-the-go.

The menu isn’t massive, but you won’t have any trouble finding something to eat. Breakfast options include the mixed fruit and nut granola with honeyed yoghurt and fruit compote alongside a balsamic roasted tomato bagel filled with avocado and mozzarella. Come lunchtime they have a choice of two hot pies, one meaty and one veggie, as well as a choice of sandwiches, savoury pastries and grilled cheese sarnies.

Pullan’s given us a few recommendations, “For lunch, try our grilled cheese using our own house baked focaccia, slow cooked meats, seasonal chutneys and house pickles, with a whole host of top quality cheeses from local suppliers and imported direct from Italy and Spain. At breakfast, our bacon sandwich in a rustic baguette with smoked streaky bacon, and our own chilli jam or heirloom tomato chutney. The pancetta, avocado puree and buffalo mozzarella bagel is pretty special too, and we also have some mean veggie options.”

If you’re not that hungry, you can pop into the cafe for a brew and a slice of cake. They’ve teamed up with Bradford roasters Casa Espresso to give you a great cup of coffee, either black or with lightly foamed milk, and that will go perfectly well with their ever-changing selection of ‘crazy cakes’ as Sam puts it.

Bears Pantry is only here for three months, so don’t hang around – whether it’s for a brew, breakfast or lunch, you won’t regret it.
