Start your day right with a whopping breakfast – you’ll get meat-free sausages, garlic mushrooms, roasted vine tomatoes, smoky baked beans and a wedge of sourdough toast heaped with smashed avo. Fancy a kebab? Head to Doner Summer to try their plant-based spin on the takeaway favourite. They’ve got five lip-smacking kebabs to choose from. There’s a classic Berlin Doner, packed with spiced seitan, a Mediterranean-inspired Gyros with garlic & oregano chick’n and even a veggie-powered Fava Balle with beetroot falafel, hummus, salads and green chilli sauce. Oranaise is a slice of North Africa in Hyde Park, decked out with delicate trinkets and ornate chandeliers from far-flung countries. They’ve got a huge vegan menu for you to choose from and all their dishes come bursting with Mediterranean flavours. You can snaffle their kebabs, burgers, mezze platters and tapas all day long. Then come 5pm, you can tuck into their evening menu of hearty tagines. Go for the Dolma – it brings together stuffed peppers, aubergine and tofu in a warming stew that’s served with basmati rice and bread.

Punk Vegan Nachos

Punk is a small but mighty eatery that’s hugely popular with the Hyde Park masses. The cafe itself is full of rustic charm, with wood panelling and tumbling green plants – but the cosy decor’s not the only reason that people flock here. They’ve also got some of the best vegan food in Leeds with a menu of belly-busting American classics – think burgers, burritos, chilli cheese fries and cauli wings, all 100% plant-based. Humpit’s special-recipe hummus is the stuff of legend and you can get it by the bowlful from their Corn Exchange eatery. Everything on the menu is 100% vegan, so you can go wild and tuck into spicy kebabs, filled pitas and salad bowls topped with crispy falafel. Whatever you choose it’ll come with a healthy dollop of that all-important hummus, a drizzle of tahini and an array of colourful salads. You can get fries on the side and if you fancy a dessert, their sweet chickpeas are seriously moreish.

The folk at Friends of Food pride themselves on using ethically-sourced ingredients to create deliciously unusual vegan burgers you won’t find anywhere else in Leeds. It might be a tiny takeaway, but they’re all about tasty food with big flavours, from truffle oil-infused Chick’n burgers to panko cauli tossed in wasabi mayo. Try the Big B – it’s an American-inspired behemoth, which loads two Beyond Meat patties with smoked gouda cheez, maple ‘bacon’ and pickles, finished with their signature whisky BBQ sauce.

You can expect honest fare bursting with local veggies, like deep-fried cauli in sweet ’n’ sour sauce, mushroom falafel with yellow pea hummus and stuffed harlequin squash with dairy-free rarebit. The menu changes weekly, so there’s always a new, delectable vegan dish to try. The yaki soba brings together tofu, oriental veg and soy sauce, all stir-fried with wheat noodles. There’s ‘vish’ (deep-fried banana blossom) and ‘tofish’ (soya bean) fillets, which come in crispy, golden batter. They’ve got all your lunch needs covered with a slew of chunky sarnies, oozing melts and stacked bagels. Why not treat yourself to their ‘Meat’ball Marinara? Juicy meat-free meatballs are smothered in a rich tomato sauce, sprinkled with dairy-free cheese and toasted ’til crisp and golden. It’s served with fluffy hash browns, perfect for mopping up that delicious marinara sauce.

Rola Wala serve up twisted Indian street food made the way you want it, so it’s easy to go vegan at this Leeds eatery. First, choose your base – there’s naan, rice or a low-cal cauli bowl. Then get it loaded with either a warming Keralan chickpea curry or a fiery ‘Meatball’ rogan josh, which is full of Meatless Farm ‘meatballs’ plus Indian chillies and spices. Top it all off with salad and lashings of sauce. You get at least 47 spices and ingredients packed into each dish, so it’s a real treat for the tastebuds.

Bundobust is always a winner. They combine craft beers with irresistible Indian street food and better yet, the menu is fully veggie with plenty of vegan options to boot. Slow-simmered tarka dhal, crispy bhajis drizzled in sweet tamarind chutney and hearty chole saag infused with ginger – you’ll want to order the lot. They even do a vegan version of their ever-popular Vada Pav. A deep-fried ball of spiced mashed potato, sandwiched in a golden bun with red and green chilli chutneys, it’s a must-try.

Grove Cafe is a straightforward, no-frills eatery in Hyde Park. They pride themselves on their huge and varied vegan offering, so you can feast on everything from belly-filling burgers to creamy soya kormas. But don’t miss out on their pizzas. There are 15 different types and each one comes loaded with veggies and stringy dairy-free cheese. The vegan feast is a 12-inch behemoth that comes loaded with juicy chicken, garlic sausage and fiery pepperoni – all meat-free versions of course.

Tharavadu is a Michelin-recommended restaurant that specialises in a proper Keralan dining experience. They serve a refined take on the food traditionally enjoyed in Keralan family homes and there’s loads of vegan dishes for you to snaffle. There’s the chickpea kadala masala, potato masala or the vazhuthananga – a curry that blends aubergines with roasted onions and coriander seeds in a creamy cashew nut sauce. Can’t decide? Go for the thali – it’s a feast of seven chef’s choice curries, soup, sides and dessert.

Mog’s was one of the first all-vegan eateries in the city and their plant-based junk food never fails to hit the spot. It’s burgers galore, with everything from classic cheeseburgers to whopping BBQ stacks. But that’s just the start, because they also do sticky ‘ribs’, gorge-worthy hot dogs and some of the best fried ‘chicken’ in Leeds, which you can enjoy tossed in Korean BBQ sauce or smothered in Southern-style gravy. And to wash it down? It’s got to be a dairy-free frappe.

That means you can slurp up big bowls of noodles like pad kee mao or go for a fiery curry that’s loaded with Asian veggies. Feeling particularly ravenous? Bring a friend and go for the Lotus set menu. You’ll get an assortment of veggie tempura and sweetcorn patties to start, before gorging on Paenang Thai curry, spicy veg stir fry and fragrant rice.

Fettle is the go-to restaurant for vegan foodies in Leeds. They use inventive ingredients and unique flavour combinations to bring you a brunch menu like no other.
