Based in the middle of Hyde Park, the Brudenell Social Club is a Leeds music institution, and it’s the perfect way to spend a first date. In one room, they often have the best up and coming talent playing into the night, as well as the odd big names from time to time, while in the other, you can pull up a pew with your date and get to know each other, as you sup beer, ale or spirits that won’t break the bank.

2. Find a gem on a our record store trail

Jumbo Records, Leeds

Leeds is blessed with three marvellous record shops, and if you’ve got a daytime first date with a fellow music lover, why not trawl the racks to find your next CD or vinyl record? Who knows, it could end up being the first dance at your wedding. before we get ahead of ourselves though, Jumbo Records and Crash Records, in the Merrion Centre and on The Headrow respectively, blend a huge range of vinyl albums and singles with a range of CDs and gig tickets, while Relics specialises in second hand gems.

3. Relive the good ol’ days

Wire Club, Leeds

Music fans love to reminisce about the good ol’ days, revelling in the tunes they used to listen to as teenagers – and Leeds has plenty of places where you can do just that. It makes for a great conversation starter as you’re partying away to classic rock and pop punk tunes at The Garage at The Key Club on a Friday, or nineties and noughties indie anthems at Fuzzy Logic on a Thursday.

4. Pay tribute at the Duck and Drake

Duck & Drake, Leeds

Okay, so it might not be a venue you’ve thought of before for a first date, but The Duck and Drake could be the start of something special. They have live music on nearly every night of the week, often paying tribute to our favourite artists from history. So why not revel in the tunes you both love, while treating yourself to a drink or two? After all, the gigs are free and the booze is surprisingly affordable.

The lively bar makes for a cracking setting to get to know your prospective partner too, with copious amounts of lager and spirits on the go, as well as more than enough Jager to make Tuesday a hazy one – it’ll be worth it though.

6. Show off your dance moves

HiFi Club

You might need a drink or two to lose the inhibitions first, but Leeds has loads of venues for you to show off those dance moves, whether they’re good or bad, particularly if you like classic tunes. Both HiFi and Smokestack have DJs on throughout the week, playing the best soul, funk and jazz anthems from the past, while Milo does classic rock’n’roll, psych and soul on a weekend.

7. Blend soul food and a gig

The Wardrobe, St Peter's Square, Independent bars in Leeds

You get the best of everything at The Wardrobe, which makes it perfect for first dates. They have a bar that’s chock full of craft beers and spirits, as well as a hefty cocktail list. If you’re peckish, the Soul Kitchen provides a taste of the Caribbean, serving everything from jamabalya to callalloo fritters.
