The logo of legendary Manchester band The Stone Roses was spotted in Leeds tonight – and the band have now announced two shows in the city next June.
Bucket hats at the ready – the observant few wandering past Bond Street on Monday evening may have spotted a large lemon shining brightly into the sky on Trinity’s digital billboard.
The logo, used by The Stone Roses, has been a fixture in cities where the band have played over the past five years since announcing their reformation in 2011 – and the iconic group have now announced two dates in Leeds. They will play at First Direct Arena on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st June 2017, with tickets going on sale at 9.30am on Friday 9th December 2016.
It comes on the back of rumours that the band would headline next year’s Leeds Festival, 21 years after their disastrous final show at sister event Reading Festival in 1996. That now seems unlikely, given that they’re already playing here this summer, but denied rumours of a Glastonbury performance suddenly feel like they have more potential.
Regardless, with Ian Brown, John Squire, Mani and Reni back together again, they have reclaimed their place as one of the biggest bands in the world, which all started with the iconic self-titled debut album of 1989. Tracks like ‘I Wanna Be Adored’, ‘She Bangs the Drums’, ‘Made of Stone’, ‘Waterfall’ and ‘I Am The Resurrection’ have proved timeless, and despite the initially underwhelming, but now criminally underrated follow-up ‘Second Coming’, the Roses are still as influential as ever.
Announcing their shock reformation in 2011, they’ve gone on to play huge reunion shows across the world from Manchester to New York, Barcelona and Tokyo. And they’ve taken their reunion to even greater heights this year, working on fresh music in London and releasing two brand new tracks, with ‘All For One’ and ‘Beautiful Thing’ becoming mainstays on the airwaves.
It’s the Leeds gig that the world (or just us and you) has been waiting for, and their duo of First Direct Arena shows next June will be one of the musical highlights of 2017 for the city. They haven’t performed in Leeds since their last Town and Country Club gig on 13th December 1995, so it’s going to be the hottest ticket in town.
