The Light’s Battle of the Bands competition is hotting up as the final five groups are announced ahead of the event on Saturday 29th November 2014.
For five of Leeds’ brightest musical talents, the chance to win some top prizes at The Light’s Battle of the Bands has moved a step closer. From nearly 60 entries, Issimo Music, Barmines, This City Limits, The Red Shades and Benson have been deemed worthy of a place in the final at The Light on Saturday 29th November 2014 from 6pm.
The competition will be fierce as the five battle it out for prizes that include free studio time, a Tanglewood Les Paul guitar, and chances to play at future events at The Light.
Have a listen to each of the bands below ahead of the final at The Light where you’ll get to see them in all their glory.
The brainchild of Bradford’s Abi Uttley and Marc Otway from Yeadon, Issimo has been just the two of them with an acoustic guitar and a pair of show stopping vocals. But now they’ve expanded to a six piece, and they sound massive, with latest single ‘If You Know How’ being a lesson in how to fuse contagious pop, funk and soul.
If you like your indie rock’n’roll drenched with a bit of swagger, then The Barmines will be the band for you. They’ve given a glimpse of their potential with cuts like ‘Hey Runner’ and ‘Dirty Pretty Little Lies’, but debut single ‘These Days and Nights’ should take the city by storm, scheduled for March 2015.
This City Limits
Punking things up at The Light’s Battle of the Bands are This City Limits. Picking up the best influences in pop punk from both sides of the Atlantic, they’ve made waves locally with their first two singles, ‘Amputate’ and ‘Colourblind’. And if they can continue on that trajectory, it won’t be long before the rest of the country takes note.
The Red Shades
The Red Shades are giving Leeds folk the blues, but in the best possible sense. Their brand of throwback 60s rock is brought up to date with the gruff edge of Dom Bennison’s vocals, backed up ably by his brother Matt Bennison on drums and Cam Beattie on bass. Check out ‘Run’ for a taster of what to expect at The Light.
Brass sections and indie rock’n’roll aren’t your usual musical mix, but then again, Benson aren’t aiming to be your usual band. Well known across Leeds already with their energetic support shows for the likes of Space and The Beat, Benson are frenetic proposition and their unique touches will take them far.
Battle of the Bands is at The Light on Saturday 29th November 2014 at 6pm. Free entry.
