Dave Haslam has been a cornerstone of Manchester’s music scene for 30 years and he’s set to talk about it all at Outlaws Yacht Club in September for a very special Chinwag.
In the past two years, Outlaws Yacht Club has added the famous Chinwag nights to its armoury – these special events involve taking people from the world of music and culture, sitting them down and talking through their career with local impresario Chris Madden. Those who have sat on the famous orange sofa so far include Anton Newcombe, Alan McGee, Viv Albertine, Don Letts and Andrew Weatherall to name but a few.
And the next event continues that impressive lineage. The forthcoming Chinwag at Outlaws Yacht Club sees the legendary DJ of The Hacienda Dave Haslam come to Leeds on the back of the release of his new book ‘Life After Dark: A History of British Nightclubs and Music Venues’.
The focus of this Chinwag will be on Dave Haslam himself. He’s been a constant in the influential Manchester music scene since debuting at The Hacienda on its rise in 1986, going on to appear there over 450 times, cementing his weekly residency at the Temperance club night until 1990. During this period the likes of Ian Brown, Tim Burgess and the Chemical Brothers all made the pilgrimage to see his sets.
But that’s not all there is to Haslem’s career – he founded the fanzine Debris in 1983, wrote for NME in the mid 1980s, ran a grassroots Manchester label called Play Hard Records, cooked up a cauliflower cheese for Morrissey, let Sonic Youth sleep on his floor and introduced John Peel to Public Enemy – not a bad CV to talk through at Outlaws Yacht Club, eh?
More recently, he toured the globe as a superstar DJ on his own, as well as playing with and manning the afterparties for the likes of The Stone Roses, New Order, The Charlatans and Depeche Mode. He also released four books examining musical history via a kaleidoscope of different aspects.
No doubt the Chinwag with Dave Haslam will come full circle to his latest book, and there are few more knowledgeable people than the DJ to talk us through the unique history of some of the country’s best loved and most notorious venues, alongside his own impressive career.
Chinwag with Dave Haslam is at Outlaws Yacht Club on Wednesday 16th September 2015. Tickets are available now.
