Jazz superstar Madeleine Peyroux is coming to Leeds Town Hall this November to show off her ninth and latest album, ‘Anthem’.
Madeleine Peyroux is something rare – a modern jazz artist who has achieved incredible mainstream success. The Paris-based American is coming to Leeds Town Hall on Monday 26th November 2018 to play through her wonderful 22-year career and show off her newest work, ‘Anthem’, which was released in August.
It’s the latest in a brilliant body of work which began in 1996 with the release of her debut album, ‘Dreamland’. It was composed after the Athens, Georgia native was discovered singing on the streets of the Latin Quarter in Paris, and established Peyroux as the fresh new face of the vocal jazz world.
Remarkably, it took another eight years for her next album to come out, and it would be the moment that she made the jump into the mainstream. 2004’s ‘Careless Love’ catapulted Peyroux into superstar-status, with its laid-back retro air bringing together elements of jazz, blues and country through her own compositions like ‘Don’t Wait Too Long’ and respectful covers like ‘Leonard Cohen’s ‘Dance Me to the End of Love’.
It went on to sell over a million copies across the world and she followed it up with more critically and commercially acclaimed albums like ‘Half the Perfect World’, ‘Bare Bones’ and ‘Secular Hymns’. Over time, she’s become known for her ability to push the boundaries of jazz, bringing it into the modern world by infusing her music with elements of other genres, which means that every new Peyroux album sounds like a progression from the last.
The same can be said for her latest effort ‘Anthem’. She’s spent time collaborating with a wide array of musicians and songwriters to continue to push her sound forward. That includes Patrick Warren, who’s worked with everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Lana Del Rey, and Brian MacLeod, who’s known for creating with Tina Turner, Sara Bareilles and Ziggy Marley. The result is a captivating record that shows Payroux wearing her heart on her sleeve, as she casts a sober outlook on the chaotic modern world.
This is a rare opportunity to catch a true jazz superstar live in Leeds, and in the sumptuous setting of Leeds Town Hall, it’s one not to be missed.
