The Summer Series returns this July with a string of unmissable open-air concerts in Millennium Square – and you could be there!
Nothing says summer quite like an outdoor concert – which is why we’re so excited about the Summer Series. It returns to Millennium Square from Friday 20 July 2018 to Sunday 12th August 2018 with a slew of top-notch events. You can hear club classics played by a live orchestra, jump aboard a 70s style Love Train or see a rapper-turned-soul superstar – and you could do it all for free, because we’re giving one lucky winner 4 tickets to an event of their choice.
Round up your mates and pick your favourite event
If your name comes out of the hat, you’ll bag 4 tickets and a £50 bar tab to spend on anything from beer to prosecco. The question is – what will you go see?
Plan B is back with his long-awaited third album ‘Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose’ on Friday 20th July 2018, but he’ll also be playing hits like ‘Stay Too Long’, ‘She Said’ and ‘Prayin’. The following night you can roll back the years with Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley, who’ll be joined by 90s soul favourite Gabrielle and local funk group Ten Millennia.
On Friday 27th July 2018, you can head to the club night of the summer. The Symphonic Sounds of Back to Basics will see Dave Beer and the Orchestra of Opera North join forces to play 90s dance anthems with special guests Robin S, Saffron and Alison Limerick. Prefer something more traditional? Opera North is back the following night for A Classic Summer’s Evening – expect classical tunes like Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Puccini’s Nessun Dorma with vocals from acclaimed soloist Rafael Rojas. To finish their weekend takeover of Millennium Square on Sunday night, Opera North is teaming up with Grimethorpe Colliery Band to perform the score to the iconic British film Brassed Off live in-sync with the movie.
Alternatively, you could kick off August with a huge show. On Friday 3rd August 2018, rock legends The Pretenders are headlining a one-off outdoor concert for the Summer Series as they run through hits like ‘Brass in Pocket’, ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’ and ‘I’ll Stand by You’ with support from Liverpool Britpop icons Lightning Seeds. The next night, 80s pop superstars Bananarama will roll back the years with classic tunes like ‘Venus’ after a special 80s DJ set from Sara Cox. Fancy a boogie? Brutus Gold’s Love Train is making its long-awaited return to Leeds and it promises a night full of 70s funk, soul and disco anthems.
The last weekend of the Summer Series in Millennium Square sees two very different acts come to Leeds. Scottish rock icons Simple Minds will be running through tunes like ‘Alive & Kicking’, ’Sanctify Yourself’ and ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ on Saturday 11th August 2018, after singer-songwriter KT Tunstall plays through favourites like ‘Suddenly I See’, ‘Other Side of the World’ and ‘Black Horse and the Cherry Tree’. Last, but by no means least, it’s one for the kids as pop heroes The Vamps showcase their first number one record ‘Day & Night’, as well as cuts from their catchy first two albums.
