Tobacco Rd is bringing craft beer, cocktails and comfort food to Cross Belgrave Street.
If you’re looking for a good-time bar where the drinks flow freely, Tobacco Rd is the place to go. It’s the newest addition to the Northern Quarter and takes its cue from the other side of the Atlantic. From the rustic dive bar decor to the twisted cocktails, rare craft beers and classic comfort food, it brings a taste of the States to Leeds.
Tobacco Rd is the brainchild of Dean Patterson and Tom Price. They’ve both worked in bars across the city for years, but they wanted a place of their own. They’ve taken over the former Sandinista, a few doors down from Belgrave Music Hall, and given it a new lease of life. It’s a laid-back bar decked out in finished steel, real wood and exposed brickwork. The custom built steel bar is the centrepiece and the pop-up kitchen is surrounded by bespoke wooden panelling.
They’ve gone to great lengths to put together a cocktail menu full of classic drinks people will recognise, but they’re all done with their own twist. You can get a Grilled Pineapple Margarita, which brings together blanco tequila, lime and grilled pineapple syrup – or why not try a Tobacco Rd Old Fashioned? It has a rye whiskey base mixed with liquorice bitters and their own homemade rhubarb and hickory syrup. Presentation is everything here, so they serve it in a tobacco tin, surrounded by the rich aroma of blow-torched tea leaves.
This isn’t just a place for cocktail lovers. They have a petite wine list with three whites, three reds and one roses, as well as an extensive craft beer offering. They’ll have a rotating line-up of US beers on tap from the likes of Beavertown, Two Roads and Anchor, as well as a host of brews from Florida’s Cigar City Brewing, which you won’t find anywhere else in Leeds. But they’re not ignoring British breweries, in fact, they’ve made a special effort to showcase any brewery making American-style beers.
You can get a good old feed too. They are working with local independents to offer a pop-up kitchen that will change every 6 months. The first residents will be Chapel Allerton’s Alley Cats. They’ve built up a reputation for their classic American comfort food and that’s what they’re bringing to Tobacco Rd, so you can look forward to a menu of fried chicken, grilled cheese sandwiches and sliders.
Tobacco Rd is that rare old thing – a cool-as-heck bar that’s mastered both cocktails and craft beer. Throw in tasty American grub and DJs playing indie rock tunes, and you’ve just found the perfect bar for your next night out in Leeds.
