Parkside Tavern, Merrion Street

Taking the place of what was once The Lounge, and then Slate NQ, Parkside Tavern has added a new dimension to Merrion Street’s impressive offering by introducing four 7-foot and three 9-foot Sam K-Steel pool tables into the mix. It’s now the go-to place for pool in the city, so round up your mates and bag a half hour on one of their tables for £4 off-peak or £5 on-peak.

You can also book the upstairs room at Parkside Tavern, that’s where those impressive 9-foot pool tables are. All you have to pay is the price per table for the time you have the room – that makes it £30 an hour, with your own private bar. They’ll even cordon off the upstairs terrace so you can have it all to yourselves.

While you play, you can sup one of their many beers. They’ve got plenty of lagers, including the likes of Heineken, Birra Moretti, Amstel and Brooklyn Pale on tap, and if it’s ale you’re after, you certainly won’t be disappointed. Parkside Tavern’s hand pulls change on an almost weekly basis, with a new beer coming in when they reach the end of the barrel – and it’s not just the names you know.

“The general manager’s really taking pride in that, you know, finding little local breweries, testing out new ones and new flavours.” Henry Vaughan, product and service manager at Parkside Tavern, told us. “We don’t stick to a certain set of brewers, if it tastes good, we’ll put it on. But we always try to keep one sturdy one on at all times, like a Saltaire or an Ilkley.”

Of course, if you don’t fancy beer, they’ll be happy to whip you up a cocktail, with a menu of classic and signature concoctions that will have you trying something different on every round. Look out for the Elderberry Martini, with its tantalising mix of St Germain, Chambord, apple, lemon juice, mango syrup and fresh raspberries – or try the Gem of Piacenza, with its invigorating combo of Element 8 spiced rum, Kahlua, Frangelico, espresso and vanilla syrup.

Stick around for a bite to eat after your game of pool, because they’ve got a menu of tasty treats for you to sample. Parkside Tavern do a delicious selection of subs, salads and sharing boards – but it’s the pizza that really stands out, and Vaughan has some favourites.

Parkside Tavern offers

“Personally, the spicy pork is fantastic, if you like your spicy stuff, it’s called ‘nduja sausage and it’s got some olives on there and some really fresh mozzarella.” He told us, “The veg pizza is absolutely fantastic too. It’s quite spicy actually, it’s got some hot peppers on there, sun blushed tomatoes, roasted artichokes, olives and goats cheese – and that’s quite a popular one as well.”

Clearly, Parkside Tavern has all the components of a great night out, and one that’s a little bit different to those that surround it – come summer, their massive beer garden will come into play too, offering no less than three different places to catch the rays in.
