As another brilliant batch of Leeds Arts University students prepare to graduate, you can see – and buy – their work at their first real world end-of-year show for three years.
Animation, fashion, photography, textiles, fine art and more – it’s all coming to Leeds Arts University’s ‘Our Big Big Big Show’ this June. For the last couple of years, it hasn’t been able to run in person, but now it’s back and set to be their biggest ever show, with hundreds of graduates displaying their work. Here’s what you can expect to see, when to go and even how you can pick up an art bargain from someone who just might be the next Hirst or Hepworth…

While many graduates grab their qualifications and head off into their careers or further studies, that’s not how Leeds Arts University graduates roll. Every year – until some pesky pandemic put a temporary halt to it – their students get to display their best work to friends, family, public and prospective employers. Happily, they can now do so again, and ‘Our Big Big Big Show 2022’ is going to give them all a chance to shine this June.
It’s taking place at two locations. At Vernon Street, you’ll be able to see the work of their Further Education students, from Monday 6th to Saturday 11th June 2022. At Blenheim Walk, you can admire the artistic output of their Undergraduates from Tuesday 7th to Saturday 11th June 2022. Blenheim Walk will also be the home of The Art Market. It’s set to be their biggest ever end-of-year-show, with more students displaying than ever before – around 500 in all.
The art on display will run the gamut from graphic design to textiles and fashion, film to animation and contemporary art, creative advertising to writing and photography. In fact, it’ll gather together material from 15 different undergraduate courses, with short films from filmmaking students on display for the first time ever. It’s a great opportunity for their graduates to air what they’ve been working on over the last few years – and for you to see it.
They’re separating out the art into different disciplines, so if fine art is your thing, head into that area to see what floats your boat. It’s an approach that makes sense, not just for students and visitors, but also for employers and agencies in search of the talent of the future. ‘Our Big Big Big Show’ puts students in the shop window in more ways than one, acting as a calling card and letting them make contacts in the industry.
Want to learn more about the work on display? Often the student themselves will be on hand to talk about their pieces, answer questions and walk you through the context of the work – which is ideal if you’re a potential student considering a place at Leeds Arts University or an employer who wants to scout the next generation of creatives.
The Art Market is getting its own dedicated area this year. Here you’ll be able to pick up unique items made by graduating students – whether it’s a cushion cover or a sticker, a tote bag or print, there will be all sorts of things to take away, priced from £2 to £30. It’s a great way of supporting the artists and picking up a nice piece – who knows, the thing you hang on your wall today might be worth an absolute fortune in five years.
After a couple of frustrating years with no shows, they’ve had more applications to sell in the market than ever before, a sign that creativity is thriving in the halls of Leeds Arts University. So ‘Our Big Big Big Show’ promises to be the perfect way to see off a set of students, as well as an opportunity to check out tomorrow’s potential legends, Turner Prize winners, Leeds creatives and household names.
‘Our Big Big Big Show’ runs from Monday 6th to Saturday 11th June 2022 at Leeds Arts University, Blenheim Walk, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 9AQ and Vernon Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 8PH.
