Leeds Beckett Freshers Week

Explore your new home, meet amazing people and party hard at welcome events across the city.

Freshers week is the biggest event on the university calendar and 2019 is no different. With fun welcome activities organised by the universities and more club nights than you can shake a stick at, you can expect seven jam-packed days of socialising, exploring and partying. This guide will give you the lowdown on all the events happening across the city, so you can decide how to make your first week at university the best ever.

University of Leeds Events

Freshers Festival

Kick freshers week off with a bang at Leeds University Union’s 2019 Freshers Festival – the official arrival party for students of the University of Leeds. You’ll be dancing the night away to an eclectic mix of live music, with a unique reggae group, a disco remix DJ and a funky brass band all taking to the stage.

The Freshers’ Festival takes place on Sunday 22nd September 2019 at venues across Leeds University Union.

Freshers Fair

You’ll be spoilt for choice at the Freshers Fair with over 300 societies ready and waiting for new Leeds students to join. There’s a wine society, Jiu-Jitsu club, spoken word group and so much more, all open to everyone from complete beginners to old pros. And of course, there will be loads of free food and merch to get your hands on too.

The Freshers Fair takes place from Monday 23rd September 2019 to Wednesday 25 September 2019 at venues across Leeds University Union.

Film Night

If you’re looking for a chilled out way to spend freshers week, the Sci-Fi and Fantasy society is hosting a film night. It’s free and the choice of films will be down to a vote – you could be watching Alien, Harry Potter or The Princess Bride. After the film, the society will be heading to the pub for a few drinks and you’re welcome to join them.

The Film Night is on Monday 23rd September 2019 at the University of Leeds in Baines Wing 4.12.

Leeds Tea Lights Comedy

Comedy Night

In need of a good belly-laugh? The award-winning Leeds Tealights are putting on a rib-tickling freshers show with stand-up comedian Jamali Maddix as a special guest. Promising witty sketches, politically-influenced comedy and absurd humour, it’s bound to be a hilarious night.

The Comedy Night is on Thursday 26th September 2019 in the Riley Smith Theatre.

Wellbeing Yoga

You can exercise and unwind at this free yoga class for Leeds freshers. A skilled yoga instructor will lead you in a basic flow class designed to relax your mind. You’ll be taken through the mountain pose, the tree pose and the child’s pose as you gently loosen your muscles and ease away the first-week stress.

Wellbeing Yoga is on Thursday 26th September 2019 in the Jade Studio at Leeds University Union.

Fruity

Fruity is Leeds University Union’s most beloved student night. It turns 18 this year, so be prepared for one hell of a party. They have three rooms of music playing a huge range of tunes, so you can spend the night headbanging to Queen or cutting shapes to Kanye West.

Fruity is on Friday 27th September 2019 and every Friday after that at venues across Leeds University Union.

Freshers Finale

You can end freshers week in style at the 2019 Freshers Finale, an epic party spread across the whole of Leeds University Union. Massive names like Ray BLK, Sundara Karma and Jamz Supernova will take to the stage, followed by huge dancehall anthems and contemporary R&B to keep you dancing all night long.

The Freshers Finale takes place on Saturday 28th September 2019 at venues across Leeds University Union.

IKEA Trip

In case you’ve forgotten any of the essentials, Leeds University Union run a handy trip to IKEA in Birstall at the end of welcome week. You can stock up on comfy bedding, fairy lights and anything else you might need, then head to the restaurant to try their famous meatballs.

The IKEA trip is on Sunday 29th September 2019 and the bus leaves from the Parkinson Steps.

Freshers Sunday

Expect one crazy welcome at Leeds Beckett’s official opening party. You can party to the hottest club and party hits with CO2 blasters, glow sticks, LED walls and lasers creating the ultimate party atmosphere. They’re doing 6 shots for £10, so you can get a round in without breaking the bank.

Freshers Sunday is on Sunday 22nd September 2019 at Pryzm.

Campus Tea Party

Head to the Campus Tea Party for a piping hot brew and a freshly baked treat. It’s a refreshing break from the craziness of freshers week and a chance to chat with other Leeds students. And if that’s not enough to tempt you in, surely the promise of free cake is?

The Campus Tea Party is on Monday 23rd September 2019 at the City Campus and on Tuesday 24th September 2019 at the Headingley Campus.

Worth the Weight Vintage Kilo Sale

You can kit yourself out with a whole new wardrobe at the Worth the Weight Vintage Kilo Sale. It costs £1.50 to enter the sale, but once inside, you can fill your bag for just £15 per kilo. You’ll find all sorts of rare pieces here, so it’s a great freshers week event for fashion fanatics.

The Worth The Weight Vintage Kilo Sale is on Wednesday 25 September 2019 at Leeds Beckett Students’ Union.

Retro Games Night

Round up your new flatmates and get a friendly competition going at the Retro Games Night. It’s entirely free and they have all the best board games, including Scrabble, Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit. Battling it out against one another is a fantastic ice-breaker, so go and have a game or two!

The Retro Games Night is on Tuesday 24th September 2019 at The Hive.

Freshers Fair

You can find out about all the hobbies and clubs you can get stuck into as a Leeds student at the Freshers Fair. This is the place to go if you want to sign up to sports teams, societies and volunteering programmes. They’ve also got a team in place to introduce you to all the facilities on campus, and of course, you can pick up a few freebies along the way.

The Freshers Fair is on Wednesday 25th September 2019 at the Headingley Campus and on Thursday 26th September 2019 at the City Campus.

Movie Night

Marvel fans, listen up. Black Panther is being screened for free at The Hive. It’s a ‘bring your own snacks’ affair, so grab a pack of sweets or a bag of popcorn before you go in. This is one of 2018’s biggest blockbusters and the perfect opportunity to meet your fellow film buffs.

The Movie Night is on Friday 27th September 2019 at the Hive in Leeds Beckett Students’ Union.

Volunteering Fair and Freshers Festival

Want to make the most of your time at university? Head to the Volunteering Fair and Freshers Festival at Leeds Trinity University. You can join loads of clubs, societies and sports teams or you can sign up to do voluntary work for local organisations. There will be lots of freebies to snap up as well, so don’t miss out.

The Volunteering Fair and Freshers Festival will be held from Monday 16th September 2019 to Friday 20th September 2019 at Leeds Trinity University campus.

Zorbing

Zorbing is one of the more unusual events that’s being held in Leeds during freshers week 2019. Kitted out in a giant inflatable ball, you’ll play a game of football in a whole new way. Be prepared for serious fun and mayhem as you run, fall and crash into each other in the rush to score a goal.

Zorbing will be held from Monday 16th September 2019 to Friday 20th September 2019 at Leeds Trinity University campus.

Escape Room

You can work your way through a series of themed puzzles and problems at the pop-up campus escape room. Teamwork and quick thinking are essential, so get your new mates and tackle the challenge together. Will you make it out in time? There’s only one way to find out.

The Escape Room will be held from Monday 16th September 2019 to Friday 20th September 2019 at Leeds Trinity University campus.

Horsforth Mile

The Horsforth Mile is a pub crawl where you can get to know your new home and meet other Leeds freshers. Knowledgeable guides from the university will take you to all the best bars, including The Lounge, The Old Ball and more, so why not start the year as you mean to go on?

The Horsforth Mile will take place at 8pm on Tuesday 17th September 2019 and leaves from Leeds Trinity University campus.

DIY Disco

An interactive clubbing experience like no other, you can vote for the tunes you want to hear on this night out. With £1.50 drinks and your favourite hits playing all night long, this is a fantastic event to see out freshers week 2019 in Leeds.

The DIY Disco is on Friday 20th September 2019 at Pryzm.

Events Across the City

Ilkley Moor Trip

Why not explore the natural beauty that’s right on your doorstep by signing up to the Ilkley Moor Trip? It’s run by Leeds University Union but open to anyone. You’ll be taken on a guided walk at the Cow and Calf where you’ll find spectacular panoramic views of the Dales and Instagrammable photo ops.

Ilkley Moor is on 22nd September 2019 and the bus leaves from the Parkinson Steps at 9.45am.

The Freshers UV Neon Rave

With insane laser lighting, thousands of glow sticks and free UV face paint, The Freshers UV Neon Rave is one almighty party. Expect bright lights and big tunes, as you wave rave batons in the air and dance the night away. There’s a £100 prize for the best neon outfit, so dress to impress.

The Freshers UV Neon Rave is on Sunday 22nd September 2019 at Mint Warehouse.

Mischief Freshers Sunday Funday

You can get up to no good at Mischief during freshers week 2019, Leeds’ naughtiest night out. The team has gone all out this year – there will be bouncy castles, confetti drops and special student drinks deals all night long. Hit the bar for a £2.50 double vodka or a £1.50 shot before grooving to throwback party jams.

Mischief Freshers Sunday Funday is on Sunday 22nd September 2019 at The Warehouse.

Mixtape Project

Freshers 90’s Pop Special

Are you feeling nostalgic for the 90s? Take a trip back in time at Popworld. They’ll be spinning everything from the Backstreet Boys to Destiny’s Child, so get ready to have a seriously good boogie. And when you need a break from the dance floor, pop open a mini bottle of prosecco for as little as £6.95.

The Freshers 90’s Pop Special is on Tuesday 24th September 2019 at Popworld, Millennium Square.

Mixtape Project Freshers Shindig

With a ‘can’t be categorised’ music policy, there’s something for everyone at Mixtape. You’ll be cutting shapes to Daft Punk one moment and belting your heart out to Diana Ross the next. When you need a drink, head to the bar where Red Stripe, vodka mixers and Jäger Bombs are all £3.

O2 Academy Leeds Freshers Fair

You can find out what the city has to offer at the O2 Academy Leeds Freshers Fair. From specialist student estate agents to local restaurants, you’ll meet businesses from all over Leeds. There will be loads of freebies and discounts, so you can grab a slice of pizza and even get a haircut without paying a penny.

The Freshers Fair will be held on Tuesday 24th September 2019 and Wednesday 25th September at O2 Academy Leeds.

F*CK ME It’s Freshers

One of the most anticipated events of Leeds freshers week 2019, you’ll be partying until dawn at F*CK ME It’s Freshers. Ibiza-style sound systems and CO2 Cannons create an insane atmosphere, but that’s not all – you can unleash your inner child with bouncy castles, bucking Rodeo Bulls and candy floss.

F*CK ME It’s Freshers is on Tuesday 24th September 2019 at The Warehouse.

Freshers Full Moon Party

For freshers week 2019, Club Mission will be transformed into a Thai-style beach rave inspired by the famous Full Moon Party. They’re going all out, so expect cocktail buckets, UV lighting and neon face paints. Music-wise? House, hip-hop and disco jams will be blasting out of the speakers.

The Freshers Full Moon is on Wednesday 25th September 2019 at Club Mission.

LOST Freshers Festival

Festival season isn’t over yet. LOST are taking over Mint Warehouse to create the ultimate festival feeling with bunting, confetti and a funky disco house mix. Last year, Tom Zanetti took to the stage, this year, it’ll be someone just as good, so watch this space.

Headphone Disco

A firm favourite with the city’s students, the Headphone Disco is back in Leeds for freshers week 2019. You choose the tunes, so if you don’t like what one DJ is playing, just switch the channel on your headphones and try another one. You can listen to cheesy hits the next and R&B classics the next.

The Headphone Disco is on Thursday 26th September 2019 at Function and Stylus in Leeds University Union and at Leeds Beckett Students’ Union.

Indie Thursdays Freshers Special

At the Indie Thursdays Freshers Special, you’ll hear all your favourite tunes. Think Courteeners, The Strokes and The Clash. The night wouldn’t be complete without a sing-a-long to Wonderwall, so that’ll be in there too. Snap up a 99p Super Early Bird Ticket for a cheap and cheerful night out at O2 Academy Leeds.
