So you did it, you’ve made it to Leeds. Now what? Freshers Week is the biggest event on the university calendar and 2022 is going to be a year to remember. With a cornucopia of welcome activities and more freshers club nights than you can shake a stick at, you’ve got a jam-packed week of socialising, exploring and partying to look forward to. But where do you start? This guide will give you the lowdown on all the events happening across the city, so you can make your first week one you’ll never forget.
University of Leeds Events
LUU Karaoke Welcome Party. A proper warm Leeds welcome awaits at the students’ union this Freshers Week on Thursday 22nd September 2022 from 6pm. Join their free karaoke party in Old Bar to kick off International Welcome Week in style. Whether your go-to song is Mr. Brightside or an Abba ballad, grab a mic and sing your heart out – no previous singing experience required.
LUU International Welcome Party. Whether you’ve crossed The Channel or jumped over continents to get here, the International Welcome Party at 10pm on Thursday 22nd September 2022 will put you right at home. It’s your chance to meet your fellow international students, with stilt walkers, dancers and DJs spinning everything from K-Pop to Bollywood. Tickets cost £6.
LUU Fruity Welcome Party. The first freshers weekend of the year kicks off at Leeds University Union for their Fruity Welcome Party. It’s the uni’s longest running weekly student club night, so get down there from 11.30pm on Friday 23rd September 2022. Three different rooms, full of non-stop Fruity tunes with 500 Fruity t-shirts up for grabs – and who doesn’t love free stuff?
LUU Shuffle UV Party. There’s only one place to be the next night from 11.30pm – the students’ union! You might’ve already seen the videos all over TikTok, but now you can shuffle to the real thing with the Shuffle DJs bringing your favourite viral mash-ups to the dance floor. Three rooms of wacky UV decor and everything from pop to R&B, disco to indie awaits.
The Official Arrival Party. If you survived the first two nights of Freshers Week, or if you’re arriving late, you can head to the union on Sunday 25th September 2022 for what might be the biggest free freshers party in Leeds. We’re talking 2,000 students, six rooms of DJs and karaoke, and even a roller disco! You don’t even need a ticket, just grab your flatmates and head on down.
LUU Welcome Fair. The Leeds Freshers Week event you’ve all been waiting for is here. From Monday 26th to Wednesday 28th September 2022 at 10am until 6pm, you can swipe a load of freebies, from lanyards to tote bags – because everyone loves a tote bag – at the Leeds University Welcome Fair. Grab your new pals and head to the students’ union for all things societies and clubs.
LUU Retro Games Night. Love all things retro? Or just gaming mad? The union will host a huge retro games night in Common Ground. There’ll be classic arcade machines, like Pacman, Donkey Kong and Space Invaders, as well as 15 retro consoles, including Mega Drive, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast and Gamecube. Head down from 5pm to 9pm on Tuesday 27th September 2022.
LUU Night Market. Wednesday 28th September 2022 will be no hump day, not with the Night Market at LUU promising good food, good vibes and good times. The union will host international street food vendors, with tons of craft beer and cocktail options to wash it down with, alongside live music and DJs. You can also pick up prints, plants or posters to make your room your own.
FLAVA. Into hip-hop? There’ll be nothing but the finest R&B and rap beats blasting FLAVA at Stylus on Thursday 29th September 2022. Whether you’re big on 90’s hits or you vibe with the more recent stuff, the in-the-know DJs have got you covered, spinning the likes of Aitch, Doja Cat, Drake, Destiny’s Child, Kanye West, Lizzo, Kendrick Lamar and even more of your faves.
Fruity’s 21st Birthday Party. One of Leeds’ most in-demand student nights makes a comeback for the second night of the Freshers Week weekend for its 21st birthday. There’ll be a bucket hat giveaway, confetti galore and loads of surprises thrown in. Remember, there are always 100 tickets on the door if you’re in need. Get down from 11.30pm on Saturday 31st September 2022.
Leeds Beckett University Events
Campus Tours. So you’ve unpacked all your things and met your flatmates, now it’s time to get out there and find out what’s what. And you don’t have to go at it alone, you can go on the City Campus Tour on 19th September 2022 from 1pm at the Rose Bowl. The Headingley Campus Tour runs on 20th September 2022 from 1pm from the James Graham Building.
Freshers Fairs. This year, Leeds Beckett Students’ Union will host three Freshers Fairs across the City and Headingley campuses so you can check out the university’s sports teams, societies and activities, as well as exclusive discounts, games and most importantly, loads of freebies. The City Campus Fair is on 19th September 2022 and Headingley two days later.
Leeds Beckett International Student Induction. Moving to a new country can be overwhelming, but you can find out everything you need to know at the International Student Induction during Freshers Week. From IT support to learning about Leeds, you’ll be able to sleep better afterwards. It runs from 2.30pm in the James Graham Building on 20th September 2022.
City Walking Tour. Eager to get out there and explore your new city but don’t know where to start? The university runs a City Walking Tour, designed to show you the best bits of the city, as well as the places that will become very familiar in no time. The tour runs on 21st September 2022 from the Rose Bowl and 22nd September 2022 from the Leslie Silver Building.
Societies Mixer. Want to meet new people? Like free pizza? Well, sure, who doesn’t?! Get yourself to the Societies Mixer this Freshers Week to meet people who like the same things as you, and talk to your Activities and Events Officer about what societies might suit you. The mixer takes place on 21st September 2022 from 6.30pm at The Hive.
Arts and Crafts Social. Leeds Freshers Week can be full-on, so it’s important to make sure you relax amidst all the madness. At the Arts and Craft Social on 22nd September 2022, you could get to know a few new faces and take some much needed time out. All materials will be provided, so all you have to do is bring yourself. Oh and there’ll be snacks too.
Meet a Buddy. In a new city on your own? Leeds Beckett make it a bit easier for you to settle into uni life with Meet a Buddy. You’ll connect with other students and sign up to get yourself a buddy. They’ll be your mentor for as long as you need throughout your studies. Expect icebreakers and games on 22nd September 2022 in the Portland Building from 4pm.
Speed Friending. Want to expand your social circle stat? The university is hosting a freshers Speed Friending event, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. You have one hour to meet as many new people as you can. There’s no room for small talk, you either gel or you don’t. Who knows? You may just meet a lifelong friend. It takes place on 23rd September 2022 from 4pm.
Games Night. There are countless opportunities to meet new people during Leeds Freshers Week, and this one doesn’t involve dancing or drinking. Head to The Hive for an evening of board games, card games and any other games you want to share from your home country. It takes place on 27th September from 5pm at The Hive.
Leeds Trinity University Events
Kie-Ke Karaoke. Join your very own student union VP and President as they host karaoke in The Student Bar – your new go-to for cheap pints. It’s one of the most popular events on the Leeds Trinity Students’ Union calendar, so get there early and choose from over 47,000 songs! Kie-Ke Karaoke takes place on 18th September from 6pm.
Fete Games. Come on down to The Student Bar this Freshers Week to play all the primary school favourites, such as swing ball, archery, bean bag toss, ultimate frisbee and more. Because there’s nothing quite like a bit of competition to form those all-important bonds with your new flatmates. The games start at 10am to 1pm on Sunday 18th September 2022.
Colour Run. Join Trinity Sport for the annual Leeds Trinity Freshers Week Colour Run. It’s an annual celebration of health and friendship, and you’ll have the chance to chuck paint at your besties. There are just two rules to follow. First, you begin the race clean. Second, you finish covered in paint. The run starts at the running track at 1pm on Saturday 20th September 2022.
Take Me Out. Not only will you be up for the chance to find your partner for life, there’ll also be heaps of cheap deals on alcoholic and soft drinks – which is especially handy when you’re living on a student budget. Be sure to head to The Student Bar to be a part of all the lighty-likey action. The event will take place on Friday 19th September 2022 from 7 to 10.30pm.
Meet and Greet. Already know what clubs and societies you’ll join? Head down to The Student Bar to get to know your club and society committees. You can ask any questions you may have, or just sit back and hear what they have to say. You might also meet like-minded people ahead of the Freshers Fair. It takes place on Monday 19th September 2022 from 5pm.
Freshers Fair. Gather your flatmates and make your way to the sports hall and gymnasium for Leeds Trinity Freshers Fair. You’ll be learn everything you need to know about the university, the students’ union and partner companies (possible future employers!). Fancy joining a club or society? They’re all here. The fair will run from 11am on Sunday 21st September 2022.
Move-In Movies. If nights out just aren’t your thing or you just want a chill one, Leeds Trinity’s got just the thing. Grab the popcorn and head over to Fountains Court Common Room for a movie night with your fellow freshers. Film suggestions will be taken throughout the day so get your bids in. The night starts at 6pm until 10pm on Sunday 18th September 2022.
Baxters Beany Bingo. It’s back and it’s even bigger than before! Join your Activities Coordinator in The Student Bar for a beany twist on a classic game of bingo this Freshers Week. There are plenty of prizes up for grabs and when it’s totally free to attend, why would you not? The event starts at 7pm on Thursday 22nd September 2022.
Hooch Garden Games. Get your sunnies out, get something comfy on and get down to The Student Bar for the legendary Leeds Freshers Week Hooch Garden Games. There’ll be corn hole, Hooch pong and more garden games, with a Hooch van on-site for all your Hooch-y needs. The games begin at 11pm on Monday 19th September 2022.
Events for every student
Mischief. Grab your glow sticks, slap on the neon face paint and don those Y2K threads for a night of old-school tunes. Expect a playlist of club bangers and noughties hits for Mischief at The Warehouse. It’s the whole club experience, with strobe lights flying in every direction, CO2 showers, balloon drops and confetti. Door open at 11pm on Tuesday 20th September 2022.
Clash of the Unis. Who will win this year’s Leeds Freshers Week bragging rights? Rep your university and show support for your classmates as they go head to head in some serious uni v uni battles at The Warehouse. There’ll be massive prizes up for grabs and some unbeatable drink deals. Join in from 10pm on Wednesday 21st September 2022.
Mobo UnSung Freshers Tour. In a Leeds freshers week special, Super Friendz introduces the Mobo Unsung Freshers Tour. Expect performances from R&B and soul artists Zitah, Adreyn Cash, Jclarke and Natalie Lindi in the stunning Leeds landmark, Headrow House, a multi-use venue set across four floors. The show starts at 8pm on Wednesday 21st September 2022.
Insomnifest. Beaver Works are making a big splash in the Leeds Freshers Week line-up with Insomnifest. It’s going to be a full night of techno, house and drum and bass tunes from over 30 DJs, including headliners Tom Zanetti and Jamie Duggan. Expect mega production, CO2 jets, dancers and 4,000 ravers from 6pm to 6am on Friday 23rd September 2022.
Drag Tea. Left Bank Leeds have got your Freshers Week sorted with a chockablock calendar of student events, like Drag Tea. It’s exactly what it sounds like – afternoon tea with lip-sync performances from Charra Tea and her friends Queen Deville and Drag King Chafe-de-Fyes. The event takes place from 3pm on Sunday 25th September 2022.
See You Naked. Another part of Left Bank Leeds’ Welcome Festival, this is an ace alternative to a Freshers Week night out. Bring your own materials and enjoy a class that celebrates beautifully diverse bodies. No art experience required. Stick around for drinks with your mates afterwards. The session runs from 6.30pm on Monday 26th September 2022.
Mixtape Project Funhouse. What better way to release all the stress from your first week of university than by bouncing around on a giant bouncy castle? Well, you can do just that at the O2 Academy this Leeds Freshers Week. Mixtape promises nothing but five hours of fun, live music, guest hosts and confetti cannons from 11pm on Tuesday 27th September 2022.
Welcome to Wonderland. This is a night for the sober curious. The Queen of Hearts, AKA Charra Tea, is your host at Left Bank Leeds on Tuesday 27th September 2022. It’s going to be one hell of a fun-filled, alcohol-free Freshers Week night down the rabbit hole, with human chess, booze-less bingo and a fully stocked alcohol-free bar. Fancy dress is highly encouraged.
Taps Freshers Fest. Don’t wait for The Otley Run to sample some of Headingley’s finest watering holes. Forget the usual Leeds Freshers Week hookups and get yourself to The Headingley Taps for local produce, activities, music and cheap drinks to boot and get settled into uni the only right way. The festivities begin at 3pm on Thursday 29th September 2022.
