If your New Year fitness goals are starting to slip, it might be time to try something new – like Oxygen Freejumping’s trampoline fitness classes.
Going to the gym can feel like more of a chore than a treat, but what if you could make your workout more fun? That’s exactly what’s on offer at Oxygen Freejumping. Not only do they have over 100 interconnected trampolines, but they also offer their own range of fitness classes – and they’re incredibly effective. In fact, you could burn up to 1,000 calories in an hour, because 10 minutes on the trampoline is the equivalent to a 30 minute jog.
“You’re bringing gym moves onto a trampoline, so it’s so much more fun,” Oxygen Fitness instructor, Danielle Phillip, told us. “Some people just don’t like the gym, it can be daunting and it can feel like a chore, but as soon as you get on a trampoline, you let that inner child out. We all have that, even if it’s tucked away, it doesn’t feel like work, it’s just fun.”
It’s not just good fun though, it’s a seriously good workout. In an hour long class, you could shift up to 1,000 calories, depending on how hard you push yourself – and that’s not the only health benefit. It’s a great cardio workout, helping to reduce your resting heart rate and improve your overall fitness – and unlike other exercise classes, it’s also really easy on your joints, because the trampoline softens the impact on your ankles, knees and shins. Want more? It’s also good for your core stability, it’ll give your immune system a boost and it’ll help to increase your metabolic rate for days after, so you’ll continue to feel the benefit.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to be an exercise bunny to do it. They have a range of classes for people aged 16+, some easier than others, and you can gradually work your way up to more complex and demanding exercises as you improve your fitness. In fact, each class can be tailored to the individual, so while one person simply bounces, another might add knee lifts or tucks with toe taps to make it more challenging.
You can choose from 4 different classes at their Leeds trampoline park. Airborne is Oxygen’s original class. It’s a fun hour-long class that will see you following a choreographed routine to the music. Each track is different, so you won’t have time to get bored, and you can expect a few laughs along the way too.
Alternatively, why not try their intensive 30-minute HIIT class? “It’s focussed on high intensity moves, so you can really test yourself in that half an hour,” she told us. “You can still come along if you’re a beginner, because there are options for everyone, but it’s aimed at really challenging you. After the 30 minute class you have half an hour free time to test your skills on the obstacle course, fitness reaction wall and giant airbag – which means you’ll continue to burn calories, long after your class is done.
If you need to work off the stresses and strains of the day, Combat is the perfect choice. A butt-kicking workout that takes inspiration from Karate, Boxing, Taekwondo, Tai Chi and Muay Thai, it’s the perfect way to wind down after a long day at the office – and you’ll burn off calories with every punch. Of course, if you want the ultimate challenge, it has to be Bootcamp. It’s not muddy or military, but it’ll work every muscle in your body, using old school fitness moves. Think Ninja Warrior, with monkey bars, an assault course and instructors on hand to push you to the limit.
Whichever class you choose, you can rest assured that it’ll be nothing like your usual gym workout – and that’s what makes Oxygen Freejumping such a fun way to get fit.
